Problems in Kindergarten

So my son just started Kindergarten after having his IEP discharged in June (end of Pre-K) He did previously receive social skills group.

From what I am told he is constantly disruptive in class. He is getting up, in appropriate laughing & not really listening, lack of focus when it comes to his class work. He does get it done, but often has to have his seat moved.
Thusday was a horrible day. This past Friday was his BEST ever. (maybe because i bribed him & told him he would miss a birtday party sat if behavior didnt change) He went!!

At home always on the go & very implusive.

I called the psychologist & asked her to evalute him. Any suggestions??? We have never been to a neurologist/no diagnosis.

Is this something you may think he can outgrow, or maybe ADHD?

Re: Problems in Kindergarten

Aww. Poor kid. Some of it could just be maturity and it's a whole new setting and a lot is expected in kindergarten. Lots of sitting still and writing. That's difficult for any 5 year old!

As far as ADHD, I don't believe they diagnose that young. I took my son to a dev pediatrician at 4 and she said there could be signs but it's not really diagnosed until around 3rd grade. She was like bring in avg 4-6 year olds and I'm sure most will show signs of ADHD as they are learning and adjusting to school setting. All typical.

When you say you called the psychologist, I'm assuming you mean the school psychologist? That's exactly what I would have done too. One little boy in my son's ICT class gets distracted very easily. He has a ball chair they use sometimes and it has helped him so much. There are so many little things they can do that help, things that we would never think of. Fidget bands and a lot more. He just needs some help focusing sounds like is all (he knows the work). Hopefully they can get this pushed through soon bc I think the worst thing would be for his morale and self confidence to drop because he feels like he is always getting in trouble (which he can't necessarily control his distractibilty).

Hang in there. Keep us posted. Good luck!

Re: Problems in Kindergarten

They do diagnose ADHD that young. I would definitely look into a medical reason for his difficulty functioning. Does he have a behavior plan at school (token system/rewards)? They building psych can make one for the teacher to use with him.

ITA. Can't hurt to set up an appointment with a developmental pediatrician. It takes a few months to get an appointment with one. I am actually taking my son to one tomorrow at Cohens (Dr. Huang who was recommended to me) but I made the appointment months ago.

Thanks for your help ladies. I will def call the developmental pediatrician & get on the list.
Yes, I called the school psychologist so she can evaluate him. I am curious what she will say.

No Behavior plan yet although I told the teacher she can do one specifically for him.
She does have a simple one that goes with the them of the classroom.

My son is extremely bright & will tell me daily what he did or didnt do wrong. When I wrote a note to the teacher one day last week she was "SHOCKED" that he told me the situation.

Thanks all for your responses.
My son had his evaluation by school psychologist & she said from what she hears he has the "Silly's" He just has to learn when its time & when not. During the eval of course he was on BEST BEHAVIOR. LOL
Friday- he lost recess playtime (10 min) I guess we will see.
