Aba or parent training through insurance
Do any of you get ABA or parent training through insurance? If so do you just pay a co-pay each time they come? I took my son to a developmental pediatrician last week and she gave me a letter with diagnosis and said due to nys law insurance has to cover the services with an ASD diagnosis. I really would like parent training at home since my school district denied me when I asked

I get ABA at home through insurance. I use the Family Center for Autism in garden city. I pay my specialist co pay (not primary care) for each session -$60 a pop. Ouch. You should be able to get parent training through cpse though, I think. They are not as stingy with that as they are with ABA.
Eta - just saw your district denied you parent training. So ridiculous!

Yes I know it is definitely ridiculous. You would think with a lower functioning ASD child I would get home parent training, I guess my district really sucks lol... all we get is 1 hour once a month in school with the school psychologist which doesn't help me because 1- I work during the day so my DH goes on his days off and 2- I need someone to be able to help me with his behaviors at home
Sounds like it adds up with the co-pay, how many times a week do they come? Does the Family Center suggest how many times or do you request how many times they should come?

I don't know too much about it but am looking into myself. He will qualify through OPWDD now that the disability is documented. Once he qualifies, there is a lot of things you can get for free-parent training being one of them.
You can go through OPWDD yourself or many organizations will help you with the process. QSAC, Family Center for Autism, etc.

If you have an ASD diagnosis then I believe that Parent Training is a requirement. You can deny it but if you ask for it they have to supply it. Your district is playing games with you. The ABA is really a case by case basis but if the child is lower functioning I would push for that as well with the district. Never take there first denial as final.

I am actually working with NYTPS to get services at home for my son. I also just submitted my application to OPWDD. DS is being asked to leave programs because his behavior is so bad. We also just got ok'ed for parent training once a month at school but I don't think that will do much for us either. That is why I am exploring services at home. They will come when I want them to come. So weekends and evenings. I don't need service Mon-Fri from 9-5. I need help on the weekends. I think it is finding the right balance of both. But with a $12000 deductible I am concerned about the costs adding up.

Yes their "parent training" requirement is what I currently get now... it is ridiculous that I do not get home training. They told me per Nassau county rules now that they no longer do home training, ridiculous.

Insurance is required to cover 10 hours per week. Because of my insanely high co pay, they recomended 2 three hour sessions. So we pay $ 120/week. If we had a more reasonable co pay I would do more frequent, shorter sessions. By some loophole, Medicaid is not required to cover Aba like private insurances are, therefore the Medicaid waiver will not pick up the co pay.
