What can I expect my stomach to look like after surgery for an Umbilical Hernia? So many questions

I put this post here because it's kind of cosmetic surgery related. kind of .Chat Icon

I have about 3.5 more months left in my pregnancy. My belly button is huge from my hernia. It's so freaking uncomfortable. Every time I cough or sneeze, I can feel & see my insides pushing out. My OB said that some will go away after delivery but I highly suspect mine will not go away. This is my 3rd & last child, I am still young, in my mid 30's, have always been thin & fit even after both of my other deliveries.

How did your Dr repair your hernia? With mesh? So basically the mesh just covers the opening & the muscles are not sewn back together? I read that there are a lot of complications with mesh. If you've had this, what did your stomach look like afterwards? Will I ever be able to get it back into shape again without a tummy tuck if I exercise?

Hernia plus tummy tuck recovery? How long was it? & would love to know the cost if you don't mind.

Re: What can I expect my stomach to look like after surgery for an Umbilical Hernia? So many questions

I have diastasis recti with a hernia. My hernia is tiny, literally the tip of a thumb but my diastasis makes me look 5 months pregnant. I was always a size 4 with a narrow frame so believe me when I tell you my belly overhang makes me look pregnant. Like, "congratulations!!" pregnant. I recently went to a "herniologist" and was told the following:

The surgery to repair the hernia is "easy". The mesh thing isn't the same as the mesh vaginal stuff you see in lawsuits. Recovery is easy

I asked what my stomach would look like after the hernia procedure and he said "exactly the same except your belly button would look normal"

I asked if I get the hernia fixed and do a zillion crunches and exercise etc will that help the rest of my stomach- said most likely not but go ahead and try

I asked if I don't get the hernia fixed can I exercise and make all of this look better. He said well you can try but if your hernia does get worse then he advised that I get the hernia fixed then

Said the only thing that would make my stomach look better would be a tummy tuck. Which would require a very long and painful recovery, but would be worth it if I wanted to look a certain way.

So, big tankinis and loose shirts for the rest of my life. Or hell, I can take advantage when people offer me their seat lol

What can I expect my stomach to look like after surgery for an Umbilical Hernia? So many questions

I just had surgery last Tuesday. I had to gave my gallbladder removed and the surgeon discovered a small umbilical, hernia during the consultation. The surgery was done laparoscopically through the belly button and three other points (for the gallbladder) so on the way out he just did a stitch to repair the hernia.

Everything looks totally fine. Although I never even knew I had it.

Thank you for this. It's very helpful.
I have been looking up Diastasis Recti & came across the MUTU exercise system. Reviewers swear that their DR shrank in size. Once I see what my after birth situation is, I may get it.

I hope you are feeling better. And that's great you never knew you had it & your Dr repaired it! I wish that were my case. Mine is so obvious & right now uncomfortable & I do not want to look 5 months pregnant forever.

Hopefully it won't be as bad after delivery. Then you can meet with surgeons when you're ready.

yeah it's a tough decision

Some people, I'd imagine, get it done while they're in the hospital

Others prob wait and try exercising etc first

I should google that mutu also. There was some other program- maybe it was mutu, I can't remember, but I should try Something.

We should do it together!

Yes! I would do it with you but I'm not due for 3 more months. I probably shouldn't even see a surgeon about the hernia until after my 6wk post partum visit.

You mean before your pregnancy? I guess what I want to know is will I be able to feel strong in my core area again & will my stomach be able to look flat-ish (I'm not expecting a model body but at don't want to look 4 month preggo) with exercising?

Yes. I had surgery to remove my gallbladder 5 weeks PP. At that point my stomach was already pre pregnancy flat. The surgeon found the umbilical hernia during the gallbladder surgery. ( I had no idea I had it. No symptoms).
My stomach was fine after. I don't exercise and I eat like shit but if I put in half an effort my stomach would be flat.
