Thanksgiving menu

I'll be hosting my first Thanksgiving this year and looking to switch up the menu a bit from our norm and make it different than our families but still keeping it somewhat traditional. I saw a cranberry sangria recipe on pinterest I want to make and I'll be baking turkey cupcakes for the kids (decorated like turkeys not made of turkey lol). I also want to make a ham, but looking for a new way to make it.

What do you guys serve that's fun and different, but still delicious and somewhat traditional?

Thanksgiving menu

We go out now but when we were still going to my nanas my aunt would make a turkey breast. Marinated in white wine and garlic and oil. And we always had manicotti

Thanksgiving menu

I'm hosting this year and I plan on making turkey breast (instead of a whole turkey), ham, cornbread cranberry stuffing, sausage stuffing, and asparagus. My family will bring the sweet potatoes, antipasto and dessert. My Dh plans on making a pitcher of apple cider sangria too.

Re: Thanksgiving menu

I make stuffing (which is obviously traditional), but mine is made non-traditionally with turkey sausage, chestnuts (my fav!!), and dried cranberries. It is amazing. I hate stuffing and I still look forward to it.

I also make a cranberry sangria (white wine, right?)

I've made turkey cookies before, sugar or butter cookies with frosting, m&ms and candy corn for the turkeys. They looked incredibly festive but they just weren't that great too eat. I'd rather my desserts be delicious than look delicious and not be tasty.

I also do sweet potatoes with marshmallows. for some people that is traditional for others it is still a twist. I just starting adding pecans to it as well and its even better. Or sometimes I just make a sweet potato pie. Who doesn't like dessert as a side instead?!?

I make fancy rolls for the bread basket.

I like to make my own cranberry sauce, whole. but my mom always made this delicious one that has orange and nuts with it. She got it off an ocean spray cranberry bag but I havent been able to find it.

I like to make stuffed mushrooms that are stuffed with chestnuts for appetizer, also baked brie that has cranberry sauce on it.

Re: Thanksgiving menu

Maybe you could also give us a list of what is traditionally served with your family/families and we can come up with creative ways to reserve those things!!

I forgot you mentioned ham. Pineapple ham is a big hit in many of my friends

Thanks!

It will be hard to go up against my mom's and my mil's Thanksgiving, so I guess that's part of the reason I'd like to give it a little twist to make it my own. And it doesn't help that they both basically threw it on me this year. (I'm a much better guest than host lol)

The usual (combining both): chestnut and sausage stuffing, cornbread stuffing, sausage casserole, glazed carrots, sweet potato casserole with marshmallow streusel topping, creamed spinach, rolls, cranberry sauce, cranberry orange relish, broccoli rabe with garlic, roasted butternut squash, mashed potatoes, roasted turkey, sweet potato pie, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, full appetizer spread.

I love pineapple ham, that's how my mom serves it. My mil makes a brown sugar and maple glazed ham that is also delicious.

ugh it's so hard to come up with a new menu since they have all the bases covered, I'm drawing a blank lol. I like the brie and cranberry puff pastry idea.

You guys eat the best of everything it sounds. Stick with the regular. Maybe they just wanted it at your place and less work? You can still have each of them bring one or two dishes each or maybe your mom can come early and cook with you at your house. Thats the best for a transition from everyone else hosting to you now hosting.

Yeah they're both like motorized Martha Stewarts on wheels during the holidays lol we've def been spoiled. But now it's getting to be too much for them so mil basically put it on the kids and my mom went right along like it's a good idea or something. Thanksgiving is my turn Chat Icon I can barely boil water lol. They will each bring something and my mom said she'd come over early to help but I know it'll be a disaster already as my mom's not the patient type when it comes to the kitchen and I may have to kick her out or get her drunk lol. I wanted to get a head start with menu ideas. I don't want to have to order pizza lol. I don't know how to make a turkey without accidentally burning it :( fingers crossed this doesn't turn into the Griswald family Christmas dinner.

Re: Thanksgiving menu

Instead of reinventing the wheel, can you ask family to bring dishes and then maybe make/buy a few things? I host Christmas because it's my favorite holiday and I have little ones. But I am not a cook. My mom does most of the cooking, my aunt brings a couple of things, and so does DH's mom. I don't stress myself out, we have a great meal, and most importantly, we're home and all together.
