Stupid question- cooking steak
I've never made steak except for on the grill, which I love
Can you make it on stovetop or in the oven? I'm assuming on a grill pan would be ok but Is it good?

Re: Stupid question- cooking steak
It depends on the steak on which is better. When I do filet mignon, ribeye, porterhouse etc., I will start on stove top and depending on the thickness, I'll finish in the oven at high heat.
My Dh won't eat a steak off the grill anymore, because of how good the stove top is.
ETA- I use my cast iron or my stainless steel flat top so I get an even crust.

Didn't think about the type of steak/how to cook it Thanks for this, both of you
I guess the best way for a first timer would be to use a grill pan - do you sear it and get the lines across? Then let it cook for a few and then put it in the oven?

Stupid question- cooking steak
I have a cast iron fry pan that I sear the steak in. Thick steaks will go into the oven if I need to get them done a little bit more in the middle. I don't bother with a grill pan, just one more thing I don't have the room for. I rarely use the broiler anymore for steak, DH likes the "crust" that comes with searing.

Re: Stupid question- cooking steak
Seat high heat for a few min on each side then lower the flame and cook a little longer. I use a regular pan on the stove top. Times vary with cut and how rare you want your steak
