underwhelming response when telling parents
so we had dinner with my parents tonight and told them, and they just seemed pretty... underwhelmed. they had guessed why we wanted to have dinner, so maybe that's why, but i was expecting a little more excitement. my dad at least was a little effusive, but my mom was so lah-dee-dah about it.

I'm sorry. I can imagine it must have been hurtful for you. My parents are the same way but they are like that in general with everything. They show their excitment along the way in other ways like picking out clothes, baby gear, etc. Maybe yours are like that?

I don't know - they aren't like that with everything, which is why I was expecting more, especially since my mom has been chomping at the bit for years for me to have a kid. She did offer to take me shopping for some mat clothes, which is nice. And I am sure they will be very generous with getting gifts for the baby. But she just seemed so blase about it.

My mom is the same way. Just her personality. Did not get excited about my engagement, and pregnancies. It hurts because you want someone to be excited for you.

My dad was the same exact way. It sucks but don't let it get you down. Focus on the fact that you have a new baby coming. I'm due any day now and I have talked to my dad prob a total of 5 times since he has found out. He says he's excited but doesn't show it at all.

I'm sorry, that stinks they didn't have the reaction you were expecting. That's one of my worries as well, because it can definitely put a damper on your excitement. Maybe they just need some time to let the news sink in- maybe they're just in shock they're going to be grandparents! I'm sure they'll begin to show more excitement, especially since you have your first sonogram soon!

Re: underwhelming response when telling parents
My mom was a little underwhelmed, too. She said she wasn't ready to be a grandma yet. She was also disappointed because when we were little, my grandmother didn't work and took care of us and my mom isn't in a position to do that. It was a different time, different situation. After a few weeks, my mom got very into it. And now that Ava is here, she's over the moon for her. Give her time, let it sink in! I'm sure she'll come around! I know it can be a little disappointing though. My ILs went bananas when we told them and I was a little sad I didn't get the same reaction from my parents, especially considering she's their first grandchild.

I have the 2 cutest nephews in the world, so they are already grandparents. So maybe that's why they are so blase about it? But that sucks if that's the reason.

underwhelming response when telling parents
My in-laws didn't care at all when we told them. My SIL announced her pregnancy VERY early, so a few weeks before me and they were coming off the heels of that (I was due a month and a half before my SIL).
My parents were thrilled.
Fast forward to DD being born, my parents have been zero help and couldn't care less if they see their granddaughter while my in-laws always make a point to see her and have helped when they can. So their reactions now don't dictate the future!

My mother is the exact same way. She never shows joy or that she's happy for you. She wasn't excited when I got engaged, when I got married, or any of the times I told her I was pregnant.... She just said "I had a feeling"... Which is bs but she loves to act like a know it all. My in laws and brother were excited so that makes up for it.

Maybe your mom is being more cautious and is more concerned for you so she didn't go overboard or maybe she needs time for it to synch in

I'm so sorry. My MIL was the same way. It was hurtful. But as my pregnancy progresses she has been very supportive and excited. I hope they start showing you the love and excitement soon!.

Re: underwhelming response when telling parents
I know my mom was slightly like that bc she was too scared since getting pregnant was a very long road for me, as time went on and all ended up well there wa/is no lack of excitement at all.

How far are you? In my pregnancy with my DS we announced to a group of close friends (at 6 weeks) and got an awkward silence and blank stares.

I was 7 weeks when I told them. But I'm 9 weeks now and it still hasn't been any different with her.
