Advice

Looking for some advice and guidance...my daughter is turning 8 and is a third grader...she has always been an extremely slow reader and very dis-fluent...she "reads" above grade level, but her rate does not match her accuracy and comprehension at all...she is still very slow and choppy on a book that is easy for her to decode. I have always had concerns but it sort of hit me this week that it isn't typical for a third grader...she has a lot of b/d reversals still as well...we currently have an appointment to see Dr. Valle in Commack at the end of December for an educational eval, but any other suggestions of where to look for some answers?? We are doing some work on visual tracking at home, but I'm not even sure it is targeting her issues...Any advice, help?? I'm a special ed teacher, but this feels a little outside my area of specialty, especially because its my own baby...

Advice

Ask for a reading eval at school. A robust reading program will help with comprehension. She may need resource room or reading lab.

I'm a special Ed teacher in her district. I know they will offer her nothing in terms of services without an outside eval that supports it.

The divinci center gives the best outside evaluations for reading, but I have never heard of a school giving services without testing themselves first regardless of what an outside evaluation says. That way if the school does not come back with anything you can request and IEE and have them pay for the evaluation instead of you.

I feel like I am in a bit of a tough position because I am a district employee...I know the district will test her themselves, but I also know most likely the limited testing they will do won't show her struggles, so I feel like if I come in with some outside testing that shows her areas of weakness it will help my case...my district isn't wonderful about giving services so it will be a battle for sure...right now she is actually performing above level, but as the amount of reading increases, I'm sure she will have more difficulty keeping up with the pace...

Re: Advice

does your district do Wilson? very.good program for disfluent readers (I am certified so feel free to ask me any questions). how is her decoding and encoding? reading lelvel?

also, a visit to a goid ophthalmologist and or neurologist might not be a bad idea if you are seeing signs of dyslexia.

also as a district employee, perhaps you can ask them directly to do the testing that will target the weakness. the WiAT, Woodcock Johnson all have fluency and decoding subtests. also the WADE. I am sure I am forgetting others, but these are the ones my district uses.

I'm going to ask if anyone is Wilson certified. I believe the only reading interventions given right now are LLI, Read180, and System 44. I'm pretty sure the only way I will get Wilson is through an IEP mandated service. She will never qualify for AIS reading, unfortunately. I'm going to make an appointment with the pediatric opthamologist for an updated eval for my records. I'm starting some visual tracking work that my friend who is a vision specialist gave me...he feels it will show me her weaknesses and help her to strengthen the way her eyes work together, if this is actually her issue.

ny district does Wilson has an AIS service for students, others iys IEP driven. I would absolutely see if that can be the case.for her. if her comprehension is grade level or higher, any.of those other programs are not going to target the problen. Wilson also has fluency materials that can be used separate from, or in conjunction with, the Wilson program. just words is also another program by Wilson that addresses fluency and word study, which might be a good fit for your daughter if her decoding is other wise decent. my district uses just words as an AIS service as well.

I'm a little confused. She is reading at grade level and comprehension is fine. Her decoding or sight word vocabulary she has difficulty with? As well as fluency? I'm a special education teacher, specializing with reading in the primary grades. One way to build fluency is through fluency checks. You can google it and teachers pay teachers have some great ones on it. Reading theater and rereading also help to build fluency.
If decoding and encoding is a difficulty then a program like wilson in third grade is a good way to go if there is a huge gap. But you are saying she is on grade level so I do not think she would qualify for a program like that which is usually used with students more than a grade level below.
I have experience with both system 44 and read 180. Not a fan of either, and didn't see great progress with either. System 44 is for decoding weakness, and Read 180 is more comprehension focused. I don't love putting students on a computer to teach, especially those with weaknesses.
I would say continue with the evaluation you have scheduled and you might want to look into the reading clinics at CW Post or Hofstra. I know Post is maybe $200 a semester and they do lots of intensive reading assessments and then create programs individually for each child based on the testing. Columbia's Teachers College also has an awesome clinic but probably too long a commute.
