DOE hiring?

anyone in the DOE in Queens and looking for a special ed and/or math teacher? Looking to snag a mid-year position and get out of my LI job! I am untenured but would have received tenure this June the city. I want to try to go back ASAP so that I can try to pick up where I left off in the tenure process.

I'm pretty sure if you resigned from the DOE to go to LI you would have to start over in the tenure process. And, now, it's four years on probation before getting tenure anywhere in NYS because of the change in tenure rules effective July 1, 2015.

Re: DOE hiring?

If you resigned from the DOE before you were tenured, I'm 99% sure if you go back you'd have to start all over again. Not positive.

Why are you looking to give up a LI job though??

DOE hiring?

I have an interview tomorrow afternoon in district 25. There are many reasons, but specifically:

1. Where I am now, I was under the impression I would be teaching math/special ed, but I am pushing into 4 major subject areas for ICT and I am not allowed to teach the classes. The dynamic in the building is that the gen. ed teacher teaches and I am to circulate the room and not add to any class discussion. I did not go to school to become a TA for the rest of my career.

2. I teach basically a resource room type of class, and need to teach all 4 subject areas to my students. It is very stressful preparing for projects, homeworks and exams for 4 subject areas at once, and have to make sure I am up to date on all of the material at the same time. I am trained and experienced in math, and haven't been in the classroom for the other subjects since I was in school myself.

3. While I have had 3 excellent write ups/observations (all effective), but the last 1 was not great. There was a technology issue that was out of my control, yet they continued to watch me crash and burn and rated me ineffective as a result. From there, I took the initiative to reach out to the AP and have her look over a few lessons I created and get her input. She gave me some advice, which I took and implemented well. I even taught some of them to my mentor's group of students to practice. I invited the AP in my room and she thought it was terrible, although I am very very very confident that it was an excellent lesson. My students were all engaged, all completed the exit pass and did well, and all did well on the exam the following day in that subject area. I was called into a meeting with her and the principal and was told my instruction is "concerning" and that at this point in time they do not anticipate hiring me back for next year.

4. Most importantly, I am unhappy in this building and feel uncomfortable about the lack of security. If I go back to the city now, only 6 months after leaving, I think I may have a strong chance of being eligible for JAREMA credit, which is 2 years credit towards my probationary period. Given that it is now 4 years, I would assume I may have 2 years left.

The interview that is scheduled for tomorrow is in math/special ed, which is my comfort area. I have all the lessons, know what I am doing, and miss being able to teach quite frankly.

Wow... that stinks... I am sorry you had such a bad experience. Those are all VERY valid reasons to want to leave.

Good luck on your interview!
