Impeachment
I keep seeing people say Trump should be impeached. Can someone please explain what exactly needs to happen in order for him to be impeached? What grounds would they have to impeach him and what's the process?

Re: Impeachment
I've heard a number of rumors that the GOP plans to impeach Trump 100%, they're just waiting for him to push through some of the items they agree with.

But on what grounds?
I would love to see him impeached but Pence scares the crap out of me. A lot of good points were made on the "Could Pence be worse" thread.

Re: Impeachment
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment_in_the_United_States http://www.heritage.org/constitution/#!/articles/2/essays/100/standards-for-impeachment
At the Constitutional Convention, the delegates early on voted for "mal-practice and neglect of duty" as grounds for impeachment, but the Committee of Detail narrowed the basis to treason, bribery, and corruption, then deleting the last point. George Mason, who wanted the grounds much broader and similar to the earlier formulation, suggested "maladministration," but James Madison pointed out that this would destroy the President's independence and make him dependent on the Senate. Mason then suggested "high Crimes and Misdemeanors," which the Convention accepted.
Because "high Crimes and Misdemeanors" was a term of art used in English impeachments, a plausible reading supported by many scholars is that the grounds for impeachment can be not only the defined crimes of treason and bribery, but also other criminal or even noncriminal behavior amounting to a serious dereliction of duty. ...
Not sure what they would focus on, or what would stick, since I'm not a law person, but I think if they could get him on Abuse of Power, Treason (if they have proof of dealings with Russia), Perjury (that's what got Bill Clinton impeached), or bribery.

Re: Impeachment
Impeached doesn't mean he will get kicked out of office.
Out of the two other presidents that have been impeached (Andrew Jackson and Bill Clinton) neither lost their office.
Nixon resigned before impeachment proceeds could begin.

Impeachment
Impeachment happens when a public official is formally charged with a crime. Then, he or she could be removed from office, stay in office, pay a fine, resign etc. Impeachment doesn't mean "kick him out", and I often see it misused. It's really hard to do.

Re: Impeachment
I dream of impeachment but more than that I dream he would quit. I don't love Pence but at least he isn't going to sound like an uneducated dumbbell when he tries to take us back to the stone age.

Ok I was confused by that because I read Bill Clinton was impeached but never removed from office.

Impeachment
He was impeached by the Senate over the lewinsky scandal/obstruction of justice . He wasn't removed from office, nor forced to resign. Nixon jumped ship before he could be impeached.
Edited to correct:Senate

Bill Clinton, Democrat, was impeached on December 19, 1998, by the House of Representatives on articles charging perjury (specifically, lying to a federal grand jury) by a 228–206 vote, and obstruction of justice by a 221–212 vote. The House rejected other articles: One was a count of perjury in a civil deposition in Paula Jones' sexual harassment lawsuit against Clinton (by a 205–229 vote). The second article was one that accused Clinton of abuse of power by a 148–285 vote. President Clinton was acquitted by the Senate; the vote to remove him from office fell short of the necessary 2/3, voting 45-55 to remove him on obstruction of justice and 50-50 on perjury.

Impeachment
So if people keep saying that they hope he gets impeached but that wouldn't mean he leaves office then why would they want this? Because there's a chance he might get kicked out? Or are they not fully understanding what it means to be impeached?

Impeachment
Ok so impeachment is basically when the House accuses the President of committing a crime and theN the Senate has to determine if he is actually guilty of committing the crime?

When people say "Impeached", they usually mean the entire process, from being charged, to being impeached, to being removed from office, so yes, they don't fully understand impeachment.

The House votes to Impeach the President, and the Senate votes to remove him from office.

It's not that it isn't understood. It's such a nuance. You know what the person means when they say it.

Re: Impeachment
Simple terms:
to Impeach: to charge with a crime or misconduct
The House of Representatives votes to impeach and charges the President (similar to a grand jury and an indictment)
There is then an trial in the Senate. The Senate sits as the jury. The Senate can then vote on the penalty. In order to be removed from office, there must be a 2/3 majority Senate vote.

Re: Impeachment
Unfortunately, despite the fact that out of everything he's done I'm sure there are grounds, it's not going to happen, at least not before midterms.
As others have stated, charges are brought by the House and then the Senate acts as a jury. Both the House and Senate are majority Republican, with the margin in the House considerable. While most of the Republican lawmakers might privately prefer Pence, they've fallen too neatly in line behind Trump - even after all his misdeeds - for that level of condemnation to be conceivable.
Even if by some miracle impeachment proceedings occurred, the Senate is also majority Republican, albeit by a tiny margin. There are 67 votes required to convict, which would mean every Democrat (plus Bernie of course) along with 18 Republicans would have to vote for conviction. A doubtful scenario.
After midterms, things improve a bit. They'll have been ample time to gather evidence of the treason it certainly seems Trump committed. The House is up every two years, so we could conceivably take it back, improving the chances of impeachment. Senators serve 6 year terms with 1/3 up for reelection every 2 years. Unfortunately, most of the soon to be open seats are held by Democrats. It's possible though because we only need to convert 2 seats.
I'll repeat my constant refrain - if you want to see equal rights, science and logic respected, society moving forward not backward etc. you must get involved!

What treason has he committed? Under 18 U.S. Code § 2381 treason is defined as follows:
"Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States."
(June 25, 1948, ch. 645, 62 Stat. 807; Pub. L. 103–322, title XXXIII, §?330016(2)(J), Sept. 13, 1994, 108 Stat. 2148.)

Re: Impeachment
I don't know how legit it is, but there is another Twitter account leaking from the White House (@RoguePOTUSStaff) which is claiming that the end game is to get rid of Trump. Ryan, Pence and Preibus are collaborating.
I may have to give up my 'not a conspiracy theorist' label for this. Preibus and Ryan are both from Wisconsin and are friends. Pence & Ryan are way closer ideologically (very pro life, very anti gay) than Pence and Trump. Whoever is running this account is saying that they will let Trump get in way over his head then swoop in to make sure it all sticks to him.
Meanwhile, Bannon may not be as loyal to Trump as Trump thinks.
It may all be a steaming pile of nonsense, but it's fun reading.
