Can someone give me a quick summary on what will be lost now that she has been appointed.
TIA
The entire public education system as you know it.
She's anti public schools, believes in school vouchers, charter schools, and faith based education. Doesn't have a damn clue about IDEA and special needs kids. We are ALL screwed! Oh..............and she's okay with guns being in school. All those damn grizzly bears we need to be ready for.
What exactly are school vouchers?
What specifically has she said she would do/undo?
School vouchers basically mean a student can opt to attend a private, parochial, or charter school and the funds that would go to their public school follow them. If the school doesn't work our for them bc they choose to leave or are kicked out the money stays. She has refused to pledge that these schools must be held accountable to the same standards as public schools. She refuses to say she will hold schools accountable for investigating sexual assaults, she refused to say that she will uphold the Individuals for Education Act, she refused to give all of her financial information and continues to hold stakes in a secret family trust, she holds stakes in a student loan collection agency so she will surely fight against free college educations for all, she refused to say that schools should be gun free zones.
I fear that under her direction, public schools will become warehouses for students with special needs and uninvolved parents. Resources in public schools will deteriorate, students will be shuffled around poorly run and unaccountable charter schools, many of which are known for being a revolving door of inexperienced teachers and administrators. All the while, investors will only be interested in what brings them the most profit rather than what is good for our children.
To add..................tax money is meant to fund PUBLIC education. Not private, parochial, or charter schools. This will be a disaster for our public school system and students.
So basically our tax money that is normally spent on our public schools will instead be used to give out these vouchers? But it's not going to cover the full tuition of private school right? So people will either have to choose to fork over the rest of the money and if they can't afford that then their kids will remain in the monetary stripped public schools that they are already in? Fabulous.
Pretty much.

How does this affect schools on Long Island, where we already pay some of the highest school taxes in the country?
Our tax dollars could be taken from public schools, and given to for-profit religious schools, or for-profit charter schools. Not all charter schools or religious schools are for-profit, but some are, and no taxpayer will have a say in where the vouchers are used.
Fabulous!
Trump went on and on about leaving a lot of governing power up to the states. Would Cuomo have any say to oppose this BS taking over NYS public schools (or any other governor of any other state that realizes this is BS for that matter)?

Who benefits? Companies that own/start for profit charter schools obviosuly, but who else? Just trying to understand what all of this means.

I remember when common core and all the state testing was first implemented reading how Cuomo is also in bed with these charter school heads so I'm afraid he may not oppose. Here is a recent article, I knew he favored them and was already trying to get the limit increased for the state.

And with this they showed that they don't even care about screwing over kids. With all the opposition for this lady, anyone that voted yes for this POS at the expense of indefensible children of our nation NEEDS to go. Even Trump supporters were opposed to this nominee. It's clear that campaign contributions, $$$, party lines are their main priority and not their constituents. They do not represent us, they are no longer fulfilling their duty which is to represent us. I hope they lose their jobs like all these kids will lose out on an education and teachers losing their jobs.
More trumpgrets will come out now
Yep. My brother and SIL were big Trump supporters. They also have a child with autism who's nonverbal. I am very concerned for what this will mean for them.
My son has ASD (also non verbal). Districts are already pretty stringy on what they give services-wise, to try and save as much money as possible, and many people have to hire an advocate to fight the school for their child needs. If funding is pulled from public schools and there are less resources available than before, then I'm scared to think what is going to happen in the future for special needs children that need services but that the district cannot/will not pay for.

Moving sounds good right about now. Doesn't anybody care about kids and their education anymore?

This is a travesty. My heart breaks for kids across the country today.

DeVos update
I don't even have the words. As a disabled mom with children who will be entering the school system soon, I'm shell shocked. I can't decide if I'm angry or sad or defeated.

Looks like the reason she was passed is because she was chosen to dismantle the federal DOE

Sorry but that article kind of made me more depressed. Support local libraries and after school art programs? Ok. But this isn't going to fix it. I just feel so hopeless and defeated about our entire political system and country. This sucks.

100%
I have worked tirelessly on trying to convince Senators across this country to oppose her nomination. I feel absolutely defeated and so depressed. I vow not to give up but I am so exhausted and helpless right now.

This is exactly how I feel.
Michael Hynes wrote on fb, "Now that Betsy DeVos was confirmed it is time to come together and fight for our children and schools. I was angry for a minute...now I'm ready to move forward and fight for our schools."
Clearly I need more than a minute. I'm proud of how many people came together over this and how hard some senators fought for our children but to fail in spite of that is so disheartening.

Agree it's depressing but just wanted to keep the momentum going. It's done so have to move forward and focus on what to do next. I agree the article didn't have all of the solutions but just posted it more to highlight that it's important to keep pressure on local reps and have everyone be involved with school boards meetings etc.
