Hempstead Town proposal would raise legal age for tobacco sales
http://www.newsday.com/long-island/nassau/hempstead-town-proposal-would-raise-legal-age-for-tobacco-sales-1.13357570
Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino announced yesterday that he is proposing local legislation that would raise the legal age for tobacco sales from 18 to 21.
The motivation is to protect young people from the adverse effects of smoking and to encourage 18- to 20-year-olds not to smoke, a news release said.
The proposed legislation would also target cigars, chewing and powdered tobacco, liquid nicotine, shisha, bidis, gutka, herbal cigarettes, rolling papers, other smoking paraphernalia and electronic cigarettes.
At today’s town board meeting, members will call for a public hearing to be scheduled for the April 25 agenda.
Under the proposed legislation, businesses selling tobacco products must clearly post signs indicating that the sale of those items to persons under 21 years of age is prohibited by law. If a business violates the law it would be subject to penalties under New York State Public Health Law 1399. The law provides for fines of up to $1,500 and potentially the revocation of a license to sell tobacco products.
In March, the Town of North Hempstead raised to 21 years old the legal age to purchase tobacco.
The law affects the sale of tobacco products, liquid nicotine and electronic cigarettes.
I have no problem trying to eliminate cigarette smoking, so I don't mind treating it more like alcohol.

I'm not a fan.
As a former smoker, no one should smoke.
However, I'm really a libertarian at heart and I don't like legislating things like this.
Also, I think the age of majority should be 18 across the board: voting, military service, alcohol, and smoking.

Re: Hempstead Town proposal would raise legal age for tobacco sales
I agree with the proposal. The rational for not selling alcohol to 18 year olds is that if it is sold to 18 year olds their 17 and 16 year old friends will get their hands on it too. So why shouldn't this be the same.
However I don't know if I agree with 21 being the age to buy alcohol, 18 is counted as an adult for everything else, voting, military service , etc....

It's a law that's being passed by politicians. Why wouldn't it be here?

So the snowflakes don't flip out that something remotely political is in their safe space aka FHF.

I didn't realize that it was up to 21. I thought it was illegal for anyone under age 19.
