My son was just diagnosed
My 4 yr old son was just diagnosed with High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder. We knew that something was going on, but there was so much speculation between it being SPD, extreme speech delay or just mimicking signs of Autism that it never seemed real that it would in fact be autism. We are shocked, scared, and confused. He is currently in a special needs pre school program where he receives speech and OT. Aside from Autism speaks, are there any reliable and helpful websites that I could go to for information and support? I also would love to.know of any support groups for my son, husband and I. Any information, advice....anything would be greatly appreciated. I know that this is not the end of the world, but right now it feels like it. My heart hurts so much and I am so so scared.
Thank you

My son was just diagnosed
We are in the same boat and feel the same:(
I came across a few groups:
SASI (if you live in Suffolk), they hold support group meetings. I joined but live in Nassau.
AHA- holds meeting at Mid Island JCC in Plainview

Re: My son was just diagnosed
Hi- I know it can be overwhelming at first to hear the diagnosis but hopefully this will open doors for services. If you are on Facebook there are many LI parents of special needs children groups. SASI like someone mentioned and also Long Island Special Education Parent Network and Our Special Long Island Kids.

I know it's tough You may have been somewhat prepared, but hearing it for "real" can be rough. Take some time to wrap your head around it. I have found other parents to be a huge source of info and help. There are so many great blogs written by autism parents.
Parent to parent egroup has a lot of info, they send emails with all sorts of groups and programs.
