Anyone have IBD?

I was just recently diagnosed with IBD- ulcerative colitis. I'm going to my gastro tomorrow to find out course of action since I just got the results back finally. But can anyone help with natural ways? Is it true I will be on medication for the rest of my life, or can I just take medication during flares and then maintain with diet/exercise/who knows what else, for the rest of the time? My brother had diverticulitis, and he said he did 1 dose of medicine and hasn't had a problem since ((about 9 years)), and he seems to think it's very similar and that I need to stop panicking.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It's not exactly the same, but I have IBS-D and have for about 25 years. At one point in my life, it was so bad I couldn't leave the house, we couldn't eat out, and if it did we had to immediately run home. I was on meds for a while and they did help. But what helped me most was eliminating fats from my diet. I had joined weigh watchers at the time, and when I started following I noticed a significant decrease in my symptoms when I followed the plan closely. Now I eat mostly protein, barely any carbs, lots of fruits and vegetables, all natural not processed foods. And I have zero symptoms. If I cheat, I pay for it so I just can't. It's really been life altering.

I suggest keeping a food journal as well to see what triggers you.

I agree. I have IBS-D as well. Having my gallbladder out made it so much worse because I feel now if I eat fat, all the bile just dumps into my intestines and I have to RUN to the bathroom.
I take a lot of Imodium. It's like candy for me.
And I also have issues with eating out- especially at the diner. I find it's because I eat greasy stuff there- fries, bacon etc.
Fat is definitely a trigger.
A good probiotic is also helpful but it can take a while to find one that works for you and your specific system/issues

Re: Anyone have IBD?

Thank you both so much! I'm noticing the same thing about fatty foods and eating out.

I wish the probiotics were easier!! I've tried 2 different kinds and it's making it worse, so it's very annoying!

Bear in mind that with a probiotic you might get worse before you get better. As the good bacteria fight off the bad in your gut, you will get reactions like gas, bloating, etc. This is normal as the good bacteria colonize.
You need to stick it out for about 1-2 weeks. If it's still bad after that, then yes, switch brands.
There are so many different strains of bacteria and what works for you will depend on what your individual issues are.

This is interesting.. I may have stopped too early then, thanks! I'll have to ask my doctor if maybe they have a brand I should try for my symptoms.
