fun day for 9 year old
For my sons 9th birthday, I am taking off work and we're spending the day together. Just him and I. We're way out east so we're very limited here. I don't mind driving west at all. We're close to Splish Splash so that's not new to us.
Any ideas? Other than Air Trampoline, we really haven't been anywhere. 
-hows boomers?
-any sports places?

Plans I have with my 9 year old include - the theater, the beach, Boomers, Adventureland, a day in the park with a picnic lunch & a kite, roller skating, and a LI Ducks game.

Most of these places aren't open during the week yet if you plan on doing this before Summer is officially here.
I would do the train to the city. Or even Legoland Discovery Center in Westchester. We like it there

If you went to the Farmingdale area - you could do Adventureland and also try Pole Position (racing indoor go-karts). My son is 8 and he likes Pole Position a lot.

Now let me ask you... I looked online and it seems like all the little rides that are at carnivals. Is it?
He's big into roller coasters (been to Disney a few times and Hershey) so I'm afraid this might be too little for him.
Thoughts?

His birthday is Friday the 30th so I'm sure everywhere will be open then.
We live in east Hampton so it would take 3 hours to get to the city one way. I know I said I don't mind driving but that's a bit far for only a couple of hours I think.

They have a "kiddie" section that is appropriate for toddler/pre-school age. But they also have plenty of big rides for older kids and teenagers. Some of the rides require you to be 54 inches to ride alone and a lot of them have height requirements of 42 or 48 inches. There is a big roller coaster (Turbulence), and rides like the giant Frisbee, the pirate ship, the big log flume, flying swings, drop tower, etc. that the older kids like.

Last year for DS 7th birthday, I had off so I took him canoeing in Riverhead. We'd never done that before. I think he liked it. It was only a couple of hours though, so I don't remember what we did the rest of the day.

So we went today to Adventureland. I have to say, I was disappointed. They only had the 1 rollercoaster that my son loved. We did all others but it really was like a bigger carnival. Very clean though. He had fun so that's all that matters. But for a 9 year old who loves rollercoasters, I wouldn't rush back. I came, I saw and we conquered.

Glad you liked Pole Position. It's pricey but a cool place!
Sorry you were disappointed with Adventureland. It's definitely not on par with Hershey or Six Flags. It is more like a smalll carnival. But I live in Nassau and it's close, and I think the value for the P.O.P. bracelet is there for $30 (compared to some of the local fairs and festivals).
But it's definitely not for pure thrill junkies. My 8.5 year old DS likes rides, too, and he rides the big roller coaster, but he also has fun on things like the Pirate ship, log flume (and other water rides), the swings, the bumper cars.

For another time you could try Geocashing. It's a scavenger hunt - you download the app to find clues to the places (usually parks but they could be anywhere). There's usually a small token in the thing you find I've seen coins, rubber balls, etc) and you sign your name to the sheet. It's fun to see if you can find the locations.
