rainy day activities for 9 year olds

I am tired of seeing my older son on tv and video games. He does not like to play legos and will draw or read but that gets old fast. When it is sunny out, he is outside all day. However, on rainy days, he is bored. What do your kids do at this age?

My DS is 8 and is also an outdoor kid, very into sports and active activities. However, he also likes his PS4/video games and tv time when he's inside. Frankly, I don't stress about it because he is so active when he can be outside.

But for other ideas - he does like board games. Of course, that requires someone to play with him, but at least there's some learning/reading/educational value to the board games.

He also likes to play active stuff inside. I don't know if it's a viable option, but we have a finished basement, so I let him bring his hockey net and sticks downstairs to play if he uses a soft ball instead of a hard puck (so nothing gets damaged). I know a lot of his friends like to play knee hockey. My friend has flooring in her basement and lets her kids roller blade down there, even!

Does your DS like science? Maybe science kits would be fun? My son got a few for Christmas and he also got a Little Passports Science Expeditions 3-month subscription as a gift, and they sent a different kit every month.

My son likes the sports stickers books - for hockey, baseball, football, etc., where you get packs of "cards" that are stickers for different players and fill in the book. He gets interested in the stats/info and who he has/still needs.

He also likes to go on the computer, which isn't much different than video games or tv in some ways. But he likes to go on youtube and watch videos that are often educational -- sports history, outer space, storms, etc.

I set up a trampoline in my LR back in December. Best thing ever. Especially if you want a trampoline in your LR.
