Leak leading to moldy wall

I had a leak that went from ac in attic to bathroom closet ceiling and down wall. We know the leak started about three weeks ago. I only found out about it when I found mold going down closet wall. I cleaned it with bleach/water mixture and it came right off, but dont know if its behind wall. I just went in there and now closet is musty. Anyone experience this situation? Does the musty smell mean there is mold behind wall and wall needs to be removed?

The musty smell is from dampness.
I'd probably take the sheetrock off the closet walls to make sure there isn't any on the studs or the outer wall.

can you put a fan or dehumidifier in the closet and see if it helps?

I have been running a fan on and off past few days. Just got home with a small dehumidifier I bought that is made for small rooms, bathrooms, closets that got good reviews online and just set that up.

I have a dehumidifier running right now. Is a fan or dehumidifier better? In the end, I will probably have the sheetrock ripped out, as I am worried there is mold in there.

We ripped the walls down. Mold was everywhere. I couldn't live without knowing for sure.

I don't know if I can live with wondering too. Was this from a leak you had? I know it is because of a three week old leak. I am wondering if it was only a short amount of time, it is okay. Ugh...now I have to figure out who to find to rip this wall out.

Yes, the tub on the main floor leaked behind the bathroom in the basement. We only found out because it was also leaking from the drop ceiling in the laundry room which we had open because of some other issue.
It could have been for a really long time so maybe you'll be safe since it was only 3 weeks?
Good luck!

Thanks so much. Yes, my DH knocked the AC pipe when going up to check the AC for another malfunction. Only we didn't know until I saw the mold going down the wall from the ceiling and went in attic and right above was the water.

Re: Leak leading to moldy wall

My whole bedroom had a musty smell. For a long time.

Ours was from water leeching up the concrete slab our house is on due to our property not being graded right and rain water running towards the house.

Anyway, DH ripped everything out including a closet and a wall and a window seat. (the windows were leaky causing that wall and window seat to get mildy_

For the flooring he had to put in a basement type sub floor that prevents moisture from coming up and paint the slab with moisture resistant paint before that, etc before we laid down new carpet..

It was a huge process and he did it all himself.

Now our room no longer smells- but we also had to take care of the cause which was the poor grading.

Being on a slab is a whole other ball game

And just so you know, we lived with this for a long time and throughout my whole pregnancy before he fixed it.
And we are all alive and well and DD is fine.
So don't panic too much
