Kids who don't get cse services

Dd has been getting ot through cpse but finishes tomorrow and as of now we aren't pursuing services for kindergarten. Her therapist does think she would benefit from using a grip and special pencils at school. Do you think they'll give me a hard time about that? I'm sure it depends on the school and teacher but wanted to get an idea of what to expect.

I don't think they will. Did she have an IEP? If so, it follows the child even after they have been declassified.

She did through cpse but I've been told repeatedly that it doesn't go into her school record and they'll only know if I tell them.

I think it would be fine. I don't see why the teacher would have an issue, but she might question why you think Dd needs the grips? Will you be sharing that she had OT prior? Or you could just say you've noticed she writes better with them.

My son received OT in kindergarten, but it was actually his teacher that made several great suggestions that worked well for us (he used a #1 pencil instead of #2 because the lead is darker and he used very little pressure).

I'm just curious, why keep it a secret that your child had prior services? If the teachers know there were issues before and see something they may be more apt to point it out if they know there is a prior issue.

As for the pencil grips, my son has used them but it caused more problems than it solved.

Oh I definitely will be telling them. I just was answering the question that it's not actually in her file that she had an iep in preschool bc that's just the way it works. I definitely want them to know so they can keep a close eye and keep me posted with her progress. Her therapist said she doesn't typically recommend a grip except with hypertension which is one of dd's issues.

Kids who don't get cse services

The file from CPSE goes in the child's permanent file. They just will not be classified as a child with a disability. The information is always there though. You should get a note from your child's doctor and OT that states what she needs and ask for a 504 meeting at the start of school to give her the accommodation. Any classroom accommodations need to be done as a 504 (unless they have an IEP) to be binding.

Hmm. this is interesting. My kids continued services through kindergarten so they weren't declassified, but I was told the same thing as OP. If we did not continue services, the elementary school wouldn't know they ever received any or were ever classified as a pre-schooler with a disability and that the IEP stays with CPSE and would not be passed onto CSE and it gets stamped declassified or closed (something like that) at the end of the IEP.

Yep, this is what I was told by the head of cpse in our district as well as the county rep on multiple occasions.

As far as a 504, I wouldn't need a diagnosis for that? Just a note from her ped?

As a teacher, I will tell you that we would not know if a child got services in pre-school. Those records are sealed; however, the parent can sign to have them opened to the elementary school. There have been many times where we have concerns about a child and discuss them with parents only to find out that they had services prior to entering K. It's great that you plan on informing the teacher of prior services so they can keep an eye on any concerns.

The CPSE information may not be in the child's file that will be in the elementary schools but it will still be in the district file. They just don't throw away was was done. It is not released to the schools directly less it is requested by the parents.

As far as a 504, you do not need a diagnosis.

I don't think they'll give you a hard time. A lot of kindergarteners have trouble with their grip. Some districts have an or come to the k classes to work with everyone.

As an occupational therapist that works in a school district
I think you should have your OT write a summary report of the progress your child has made during her current services- What goals were being worked on, What goals/progress were made, what areas of concern that still remain and what strategies they would like to see continued on a classroom level during her year in kindergarten.
I would then share that information with the teacher in the beginning of the school year either through an email or an informal meeting.
The teacher can then speak with the building level occupational therapist and both can monitor your child and contact you if they notice a decline in abilities or have concerns.
Keep open communication all around for your childs benefit and a successful school year - kindergarten students have a lot of academic demands for reading, math etc.....but the basics of handwriting, coloring, cutting and ADL skills should not be forgotten because these areas will carry through year after year as well. Good Luck

Thank you! I never got any assessment at the end of services and I'm wondering if i should have? Hopefully her therapist will still be willing to help with a write up for me.
