10% right now, but probably going back to maxing it out soon. Just lazy to make the change.

Is the maximum a different percentage for different people?

Yeah depends on your salary because there is a cap for pre-tax contributions.

Used to be 15. It was great. I was contributing almost $1000/month.
Then I bought my house and went to 5. Wanted to see what I would bring home and how it would work with the new financial situation. Kind of got used to having the extra cash in my check. I haven't changed it.

Going to slowly up it so I'll up it to 8 after the retro check.
Then I'll up it again next year to 10. I think I'll be happy with 10%.

I'm also the larger income so while I'd love to max out like some of my colleagues, we can't afford it.

Contribute what you can. Every dollar counts. And when you get a raise or move up a step, up it slightly since you are used to living on a particular take home pay and won't miss the increase.

We bought a house shortly after I started at the DOE. I think I started at 4% and then 5% now 7% and when we get the next raise in May I'll increase again. I'm trying to increase without actually feeling the hit in my pay....
