Can anyone recommend a developmental ped in the port Jeff area?

Re: Developmental ped

I believe some of the Dev Peds at Cohen's go to the Smithtown office some days of the week.

I have a preemie, and never heard of a neonatal follow up. What does this involve?

My preemie was followed by the high risk clinic associated with the stony brook nicu. She had check ups with a neonatologist every 3 months or so until about age 2 when she was caught up in all areas of development.

They just checked her growth and development. They weigh and measure, ask about language and motor skills, and do a developmental screening (do they color with a crayon, place a peg in a hole, find a block placed under a bowl, etc).

We also were followed by chaps which was home visits by a public health nurse. She was the one who eventually got dd started with EI when her motor skills were lagging. It was interesting bc the ped and high risk clinic both saw her right before and didn't think to refer her and sure enough she qualified for PT.

We did this also. My son was born at 28 weeks. However, I stopped after about 1 year and started seeing a dev ped privately. I was not satisfied with the answers SB provided. They did not really ever express any concerns. It was always just wait it out. Wait until he is 2 and they stop adjusting. That was not good enough for me. For the record, at 2 my son was diagnosed ASD. He has language delays, fine motor delays, vision problems and gross motor delays. I knew a lot of this early on and really found that SB only followed but did not give any advise.

This is the link. I am taking my 8 month olds next week on the 20th for a full developmental eval. I feel I should have done this sooner. My twins are both in EI, one just got discharged, the other is approved for further service as I have started to notice some self stimulatory behaviors.

Yes totally agree. I almost felt uncomfortable even asking questions but they weren't volunteering any information about any of my concerns. I continued going bc dd's complications at birth were rare (and many babies don't survive) and very little is known about the cause so any information they could get from her case I was more than happy to give. I got most of my info from googling and a fb group bc no doctors beside my ob and the nicu told me much of anything.

To the op, I hope you get some answers and assurances. The fact that they are already involved with EI is great. My oldest didn't start until over a year and I still wish I'd gotten her in sooner.

Sorry for responding late but I'm just seeing this now. How did it go with Dr. Milanaik? Did you see her, or the NP, Diana Li? I saw Dr. Milanaik and was NOT a fan... and a lot of my preemie parent friends felt the same way. I felt she was very dismissive of my concerns and that the whole appointment was a waste of time. Li the NP is apparently great but you never know if you're going to see her or Milanaik. We made an appt with Dr. Papianou and then she went out on medical leave so we are still in search of someone too. She's supposed to be great though so I'm going to try again to get set up with her. (I have a 26 weeker who is almost 2, has expressive language delays and had a gross motor delay on one side of the body that she largely worked through already through PT... working on getting her into speech therapy in about a month when they stop adjusting for age.)

We saw Milanik and she attributed all of my concerns to preemie issues. I thought all was fine but now I’m reading your post and concerned that she was just dismissing them!!! I have a 6 month follow up, if I am still concerned I’ll find someone new. I track my kids development very carefully.
