I hope to buy a crock pot this fall... been asked before I know
I see Shoprite is selling one this week on sale for $17.00, usually I think $25.00.
I know I want oval, red in color just not sure if 4.5 QT good size? for 1-3 people. I would like one with a strap to carry but... Oval bc I think it would fit a chicken better
Also, not sure the different between manuel and programmable
I want the orig crock pot since I just read the Hx behind this brand.

4.5 quart is probably good but there may be times you wish it was bigger. It should fit a small chicken but maybe not a bigger roasting chicken.
I have manual but I'm home to turn it off or start foods later. If you plan to turn it on in the morning before work and will be gone 8+ hours I would go with programmable.

I have an oval size Crock-Pot but it's much larger than 4.5 qts however, I feed a family of 4 and I like leftovers. I also like to make things like roasts and spiral hams in mine so I feel that the 6.5-7 qt size is a much better size as it can accommodate larger cuts of meat.
I recommend getting a Crock-Pot that is programmable. I've had the manual ones and what I don't like is they do NOT automatically shut themselves off nor can they keep the food warm after the cooking time is complete. With the programmable Crock-Pots you can set the time, it will automatically stop cooking once the desired cooking time is reached and it will switch into a "warm" mode to keep your food nice and hot until you're ready to serve. I feel like the programmable models offer much more flexibility, the manual dial models are too old fashioned for me. I like having more control over my cooking.

Over Christmas I borrowed my SIL's because I needed 2 and she has the smaller, red one that is manual. I have a manual and it does have a warm setting. I don't think I've ever had one that didn't and I've always had manual.

I have a manual and it does have a warm setting. I don't think I've ever had one that didn't and I've always had manual.
The difference is, the programmable ones (at least mine) will kick into the warm setting on it's own once the cooking is done and it will hold it there for a set amount of time.
The drawback of manual Crock-Pots is you HAVE to be there to stop the cooking at the appropriate time AND you have to be there if you want to turn it over to the warm setting. The programmable versions eliminate that headache.
When I worked and used to commute HOURS it was invaluable having the programmable Crock-Pot because if I was stuck in traffic and running late, I didn't have to worry that my dinner was going to be ruined.
