Cross post - School aide/para positions
Hi there. I was wondering if anyone had any insight regarding the hiring process for school aides/paras in NYC DOE or Nassau county. I'm a recently divorced mother of three (including a physically and intellectually disabled child) and I really need to go back to work full time but my aftercare options are limited with my special child. I have a Bachelors as well as 12 Masters credits in childhood ed/special ed. I can't return to my degree program at this time and probably won't ever be able to. I have been working part time in a pediatrician's office for two years while the kids are at school and prior to that worked full time for many years at a hedge fund in an administrative capacity.
I don't see lots of postings for school aides or paraprofessionals on either Indeed or the DOE website so I thought maybe these positions tend to be filled by those who "know someone." Would love some insight! Thanks in advance :).

I don't know anything about DOE but for Nassau County, I would contact the districts you are interested in applying to directly. You could even send your resume and a cover letter to the HR person and Special ed director (if you're interested in a special ed para position). My district is always looking for good paras but I don't know that they advertise. We're in Suffolk or I'd send you the info. Good luck!

In the DOE I'm pretty sure that you need to be a sub-para before getting hired. I'm not really sure of the process exactly. I think you'd have to get someone already in the system to help you get nominated and then you able to get on the sublist.

If possible, I would look into the city. they are paid better than Long Island and are given benefits and can enroll in the ERS pension system.
Districts on Long Island usually don't pay much more than $10.00 an hour and don't offer benefits - but I suppose every district is different. my district does not pay aides well and there are no benefits.

There are two classifications - teacher assistant and teacher aide. To be a teacher assistant, you need a certificate. http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/certificate/ta.html Teacher aides simply need to be fingerprinted. This link may help: https://www.nysut.org/~/media/Files/NYSUT/Resources/2012/May/bulletin_certification_teaching_assistants.pdf It sounds like a priority is to be full time. You should also consider applying for full time clerical positions since you worked in that capacity previously.
