Choroid Cysts and Short Nasal Bone

Hi Everyone. I am new to this so I'm just going to explain what I'm going through. Recently I had my 20 week ultrasound and everything looked okay other than the fact that my baby has bilateral choroid plexus cysts on his brain and a short nasal bone. I am told these are both markers for down syndrome and I am meeting with another doctor for genetic counseling on the 27th to discuss further testing options to get a definite answer. I am freaking out as this is my first baby and everything was going so well before this. My excitement of having my sweet baby boy has dwindled to swollen eyes from crying so much. My quad screen was negative: 1:3900 for Down syndrome and 1:23000 for trisomy 18. Less than 1% for both. i'm just looking for any consolation or anything mommas who have had these same issues with their babies. Anything will Help!

I've attached a photo of my baby.

Hang in there - pregnancy is scary enough as it is without the added stress of chromosomal abnormalities.

Downs Syndrome cannot be diagnosed via ultrasound. The doctor has only found soft markers, which do not diagnose DS, it simply suggests there is a possibility. The cysts typically go away on their own by 26 weeks or so, and a short nasal bone on an ultrasound can be completely false. The only way to find out for sure is to have an amnio. Something like less than 1% of soft markers result in an chromosomal abnormality.

My niece has Mosaic Downs Syndrome. She is an absolute joy and our family wouldn't be the same without her.

Did they discuss an amnio with you? This way you would know with 100% certainty and not have all the added stress of what ifs

Get an amnio. You don't want to stress the rest of the pregnancy. It doesn't hurt at all.

Choroid Cysts and Short Nasal Bone

I would meet with the docs before I do an amnio...it increases your odds of a miscarriage and the numbers they gave you are quite high

If it is done by an experienced perinatalogist and guided by a sono the risks are very low.
I did a lot of research before I chose to have mine.
Its important to chose an experienced dr who specializes in it.
I have zero regrets for doing it.

I’m not arguing with anyone. But there are other options the OP should discuss with her Dr.
I had increased risks with both my pregnancies and an amnio was never suggested to me.

Obviously it's something to discuss with your doctor and not a message board.
I just asked if her doctor had suggested it or discussed it with her.
And in case she had to have one or decided to have one I didn't want her to be scared. The truth is, many women have amnios and the risk is actually low when done correctly.
Just wanted her to know that in case she needed or wanted one.

Yeah, with my second, we were told he was at a highly elevated risk for open neural tube defects, and my doctor urged me to have an amnio. The MFM mentioned termination. I was so devastated and confused. I opted to not get the amnio bc of the risks and bc we were not terminating in either case. Once we made that clear, I was offered alternatives- highly detailed sonograms, genetic counseling. Which we did do. My DS was born perfectly healthy in the end.

OP, I feel your pain but try to hang in there. Research your options. I really hope all turns out ok for you guys.

This!!!! If researched the risk is actually low these days. And gives actual results rather than these 1 in whatever test that are historically wrong.

I personally had an annuity and would be happy to answer any questions. The fear of having one is in reality the worst part.
