Stay at home mom during renovations??

Anybody else in this situation?!? We're adding on a master suite.... and I'm a SAHM. my oldest is 7 and in school all day, but my youngest is 4 and only in preschool 3 mornings a week. so obviously we're around a lot of the day, with all this construction! Its a unique situation- so just wanted to see if anybody else lived to tell about it!! LOL

Stay at home mom during renovations??

not exactly, but I work from home. both my kids are in daycare/school. I lived through a kitchen renovation while I worked. If anything for me it was distracting cause I kept going into the other room to see the progress lol

As a company that is constantly doing residential work we deal with this all the time. We always try to be as quiet and respectful as possible but obviously with any type of construction there will be plenty of noise (for us its painting so not as much). We love when the customer comes out to take a look at the progress as we are moving through the job. We do multiple walk-throughs during each stage to make sure the customers expectations are being fulfilled which limits the corrections that are needed on the final walk-through. The one thing I would suggest is not having too many extended conversations that are not project related, we will obviously always engage but we want to make sure we are staying on task and executing the job in a quick and successful manor.

DC were about 2 and 5 during our major reno. We doubled the size of the house, and it took several months to complete. We had the new sections roped off, and they never went to the construction side without us escorting them. It wasn't that bad, considering what was going on.

Stay at home mom during renovations??

We lived at home during renos (ripped off the roof and added another floor on top). Would never do it again. For a few nights, we were sleeping in a room with basically nothing but a tarp on top (during a huge rainstorm of course). The workers had to go through our bedroom to get to the new floor upstairs. There was dust and building products everywhere. All this with a two year old. It was very stressful. I guess it would depend upon what part of your house you would be living in while the reno was going on (how close to where you sleep, do you still have kitchen/bathroom facilities, is there a quiet area of the house for you while they are working, etc). We definitely would not do it again, at least for the type of work we had done.

Only for the last 5 years lol. Dh is constantly in the middle of a big project although the number of days he actually works on anything is few and far between.

True. With our reno, other than replacing all of the windows, the construction didn't really affect the existing part of the house. We built 100% to the side of the house. If we built up, or off of existing rooms, then things might have been much different.

oh man!!!! that sounds crazy!!! our contractor already told us that once they "break through" the walls, we shouldn't be here. i appreciate him being blunt about it LOL he just said we'll be more comfortable, and they'll be able to move much faster if they're not working around where we're sleeping and all that.
basically, we're adding off the back of the house- a bedroom and bathroom for DH and I. it doesn't affect our kitchen at all, and we still have 2 more bathrooms we can use. BUT they'll need to go through our room and DS2's room- breaking down walls to the get to the new section (making a new hallway). so it'll just be easier if we spend 2 weeks or so at a hotel or extended stay place. So far, it hasn't been bad- they've been building the "box" outside before they break through the walls to make the new hallway.
its just little things like going around the extra cars/ trucks that are here, DS2 will usually nap for a little while in the afternoon, but no way now with all the banging- so theres goes my little bit of a break everyday. I really am trying not to stress- we're so lucky we get to do this, and I can't wait to have our own space in the house!!!!

We are at the end of this. Doubled our house and renovated the existing space. I would not recommend it lol. I feel like if we moved out it would have been done more quickly and although the contractors are clean and respectful, it’s a huge mess and imposition. If you ha e no choice, don’t let it stop you, but it will be uncomfortable. We moved to my moms for a week and it was like vacation lol.
