Is it normal to get one or two developing each observation? I've been teaching a long time!! I mean I heard teachers in some schools get all highly effectives and others with difficult principals get ineffectives. I never got an ineffective but would feel so demoralized. Usually get effective with like developing in questioning or something.

Anyone happy with the system or just is what it is?

How long have you been in the system? I find that most first or 2nd year DOE teachers get a few "developing" ratings because the theory is that there is always room for improvement.

Have you spoken to your principal/ap?
You can challenge the rating if you truly feel that it is unfair. Speak with your union rep.

I personally have never gotten a developing in the DOE. I have been teaching here for 4 years, and usually get a mix of E and H.E throughout the year. I start out with usually one H.E and all E, then by the end of the year it's like 6 H.E. and 2 E out of the 8 components.

I have been in two different schools and this has been my outcome in both of them. I know of certain teachers who get D and I here and there, though. My old coteacher got horrible ratings, but she was really old school and never tried anything they asked of us in professional development. Her questioning was very low, her lessons were done 5 mins before class everyday, and she was constantly yelling at screaming at the kids because she couldn't manage a classrom.

While some certainly deserve it, I know for a fact there are some who don't deserve the ratings they get. I think that giving negative ratings to teachers is extremely demoralizing (like you stated above) and isn't going to motivate anyone to want to make a change.

My first two years in the DOE (my 9th and 10th teaching) I got a few developing. I was crushed to say the least. It was my principals way of pushing me harder. I didn’t like it at the time. It was a hard lesson but it helped me become a much better teacher in the long run.

ETA: since that time I have received awards for my teaching practice and mentor other teachers. She really helped me to find my own path.
