Librarian here! Chat Icon (FT school, PT public). These are just general thoughts for everyone, not just the OP:

-If a child isn’t enjoying a book, it’s okay for them to find a new one. I do it fairly often as an adult. Don’t force them to finish it.

-Don’t forget nonfiction. The Who was/Who is series is awesome.

-Use your public library. That’s what the librarians are there for! They often have bibliographies of popular books for that age.

-Sign them up for the summer reading program at the library. They read and get prizes, enter raffles, etc.

-Bookopolis and Biblionasium are two great websites, similar to Good Reads, for kids. If your child isn’t sure what to read, those are great sites.

-There is no such thing as junk reading. It a kid wants to read Dogman, let them. Captain Underpants actually has some higher level vocabulary.

There’s lots of great recommendations here. Don’t forget to ask kids what they don’t like to read too. It can spark interesting recommendations and conversations about what they dislike about reading.

If anyone wants to reach out for anything specific, feel free to FM me and I’ll try to help.

My DS is 7 and absolutely LOVES these books. He started them in school in February and ever since has gotten a huge collection. He is at 29 books so far and still has a list that he wants to get. He finishes them in 2 days sometimes a a day and half.

Such a fun way for them to learn about all these people and events.

He just started reading the 'I survive' books this weekend and is really into them as well.

He takes after me when it comes to books, will ask for a new book over a toy pretty much 90% of the time. He can go from a 'Who Was' book to a 'Dogman' book and be perfectly happy.

My daughter on the other hand, could care less about books. She will give you 2 minutes of her attention and before you know it, you are sitting there reading to a ghost because she has gotten up and is onto something else.

I think it depends on the child truly.

Thank you guys for recommending the Who is/was series. I took some out for my son on Friday. They have a Bruce Lee one and he is obsessed with him right now. He read it in a day. We took a few more out too.

If your child likes the who is series, they have them on Netflix. The last episode happens to be Bruce Lee.

How about reading with her. When I was growing up my mom and I would read books together in bed at night. She would read a. Fe pages and then I would. It was great time together also.

Dd likes this too. I think it feels less overwhelming. We just started the Nancy Clancy series and dd is really into it. It's Fancy Nancy a little grown up and during her Nancy drew obsession lol. There's a Fancy Nancy show coming to Disney jr soon so that could spark her interest too. I'm not sure if my kids or I are more excited about that show lol.

My DD was just like that, excelled in reading and comprehension in school but had no interest in typical books. It took a while but I realized she just isnt into fiction books at all. She would read non fiction and biographies and also enjoys graphic novels and magazines.
