Justice Kennedy Retires...
We will probably have a conservative Supreme Court for the next few decades, in large part because Mitch McConnell refused to have a hearing on President Obama's nomination.
Jeffery Toobin, a respected legal analyst, says abortion will be illegal in 20 states within 18 months. Link
I'm personally in shock. The signs are pointing towards a very dark time ahead.

Re: Justice Kennedy Retires...
I saw that... this is definitely not good...
I'm sure there will be a lot of cases brought before the SCOTUS to reverse a lot of rights people have fought for. I'm almost positive they'll reverse the marriage equality law....

Justice Kennedy Retires...
The implications of packing a super Conservative Court are so dangerous to our progress, imo as a nation of tolerance and acceptance. It's like a huge ripple effect that will undoubtedly be felt for generations.

This is awful. I hate waking up to this kind of news.
I feel like we are watching the US crumble.

Absolutely agree.
We're headed backwards as a nation and it's scary.

You are.
It's the systematic destruction of a once great nation.
We're going to be left as a very isolated, lonely country with no allies, no tolerance, and nothing left of the core beliefs that we once held as a nation.

Justice Kennedy Retires...
If Mitch was able to hold off the previous nomination, would it be possible to block this one until after the November election?

I, personally, don’t think they will be able to hold it off until November. Gorsuch was approved in a few months. The Rs are going to get this done before the mid-term elections, which sucks.
Let’s just hope nothing happens to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Thank God for John Roberts.
But, yeah, it doesn’t look good for the US.
I’m very curious to see who Cheeto will try to appoint. McCain is kinda out of action, so maybe the numbers will be good.
This is so important.

The GOP has the majority, which is why they were able to block Garland, and why they were able to push Gorsuch through so quickly. They actually changed the rules to allow that to happen. I'm not really sure what can prevent any nomination from just getting fast-tracked onto the bench, just to get a conservative judge before the election.
I wonder why a Justice with 30 years on the SCOTUS would put in a one month notice, right before a midterm election with a very unpopular, contentious, president who is visibly trying to push past the Rule of Law, and trying to undermine any and all judges... Why not wait until the end of the calendar year?

Yeah, good question. I’m just holding out hope that bc of McCain, they can get a less conservative Justice in place.
I know they cannot overturn RvW, but it might change in other states. I’m also a bit concerned about gay rights being overturned.
ETA: I think that the Ds will get majority, but who knows at this point?

Justice Kennedy Retires...
I know this is totally misplaced anger and I know nothing of Kennedy's personal life but it feels like such a fvck you to the country to retire NOW, of all times.

Re: Justice Kennedy Retires...
from the NYT
"But in subtle and not so subtle ways, the White House waged a quiet campaign to ensure that Mr. Trump had a second opportunity in his administration’s first 18 months to fulfill one of his most important campaign promises to his conservative followers — that he would change the complexion and direction of the Supreme Court."
Every day, this country is moving towards a dictatorship. The powers that be have way too much power and extremely over-inflated egos. Women's rights will now be in jeopardy, the reversal of Roe V. Wade will have a profound impact in many lives. Yet this is the same government that cries out against injustices against women in foreign countries. WTF !

I imagine Kennedy was in a hard place. He probably wasn't thinking about retirement when Bush was in office. Then he had 8 years of Obama, and he's a conservative (with an independent Libertarian leaning) so he wasn't going to retire then. Then he gets Trump. Even if he doesn't want to give the nomination to Trump, who knows what the next administration will be. Trump could be here another 6 years, or it could be a democrat next - either way he probably wants to retire before risking another 8 years of a democrat. Also, any conservative replacing him is probably going to put a less moderate Justice on the court.
I'm sad to see him go, but it's not really his fault. All the blame lies on McConnell refusing to replace Scalia with Obama's appointee.

Re: Justice Kennedy Retires...
How is this possible!!!!
http://www.businessinsider.com/anthony-kennedy-son-loaned-president-trump-over-a-billion-dollars-2018-6
The son of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy was leading a real-estate division of Deutsche Bank as it gave President Donald Trump over $1 billion in loans to finance his real-estate projects when other banks wouldn't, The New York Times reported Thursday.
Justin Kennedy, the former global head of Deutsche Bank's real-estate capital markets division, was one of Trump's close business associates, The Times reported, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
Because of Trump's inconsistent track record in business, which included multiple bankruptcy filings and frequent lawsuits, most other major banks would not lend to him. Deutsche Bank loaned Trump the funds to construct and renovate skyscrapers and other developments in New York City and Chicago, The Times reported.
After Trump's first address to Congress, in February 2017, he reportedly stopped to chat with Anthony Kennedy, saying: "Say hello to your boy. Special guy."
The Times article describes an unusually close relationship between Anthony Kennedy and Trump and a "quiet campaign" from the White House to encourage Kennedy to retire. Trump has praised Kennedy and his work, though it has included decisions on hot-button issues such as abortion, marriage equality, and the death penalty that many conservatives disagreed with. ...

But somehow this won't matter either because NOTHING matters where this a$$hole is concerned.
