Talk to me about basement flooring

We plan to finish half our basement in the near future. What do you recommend for basement flooring that isn't expensive but is good quality, waterproof and durable in the event of flooding, and easy to do ourselves (we're not super handy)? Tile? Laminate?

We love the look of carpeting in a finished basement, but prefer waterproof material. We plan to put down a large area rug in the tv area that way if there's ever flooding (hopefully never!) we can just toss out the rug and not have to replace the whole floor.

We're new to this so open to hearing all ideas!

Thanks!

Tile

And you can get an outdoor rug for throw rug so if it does ever get wet form flood, you can set it out to dry

What about vinyl planking? When we redid our den we wanted wood. We weee worried because we have a 250 gallon fish tank so needed something that would withstand the weight and be ok if god forbid the tank leaked or broke. Our contractor recommend them vinyl planking. We love it. Looks just like wood and it was a lot cheaper than tile

We had vinyl planks in our basement when we bought the house and ripped them up because they were lifting. The problem with planks is you usually need a completely level surface and many basements are not completely level. Just something to check when researching. We just put planks in our kitchen and they look great.

Any vinyl option, planks or linoleum, will be WAY cheaper than tile.

Coretec flooring is 100% waterproof and a good option for basements. It's available at Long Island Paneling.

We did carpet because that's what we wanted. We didn't change our preference on the off chance that the basement might flood because it typically won't.

Chances are good that with almost any floor you put down, if your basement floods, you'll have to rip it all up anyway. Water gets underneath, mold grows, etc. It's often covered by your homeowners.

Yes this.
We dont' have a basement.
However we had an issue with moisture in our bedroom . We are on a slab and moisture was wicking up through the concrete slab and causing horrible mildewy smells in the room.
When DH ripped up the carpet, he put down a flooring system designed for basements. It prevents moisture from wicking up through the concrete. Then you lay wood sub flooring over it, then we did carpeting.
Haven't had an issue since.
