Shoes by front door
We take off our shoes as soon as we get into the house. There's always a pile by the front door and it drives me nuts.
Does anyone have a storage idea (other than a basket)?

Shoe rack. Vertical cubbies. If you have the room for a bench, then shoes can be placed under it.

Re: Shoes by front door
Ikea has great shoe racks. You cannot wear shoes in the house here. Go there or order one off of Amazon.
I have something like this:

Not sure if the link will work but it’s here https://www.ikea.com/de/de/images/products/tjusig-schuhaufbewahrung-wei-__0092695_PE229382_S4.JPG
I put the shoes outside the door, and they stay there.

I have something like this and it holds a lot! My DHs shoes aren't in there but myself and boys (10&13) have a bunch of pairs in there. Storage ottoman

Re: Shoes by front door
You can’t wear shoes in the house and you can’t flip off another driver??? Wtf
We have a shoe tray by our front door. It’s mainly slippers and my gym sneakers. DH wears his shoes up to the bedroom and takes them off there. We aren’t a shoe free home, but I would love to keep them out of the bedrooms. DH just doesn’t get it !
If we are having people (not family or BFFs) over, I’ll remove the tray into my office so you’re not walking in seeing the shoes.

Re: Shoes by front door
Can I ask how someone would know if you wear shoes in your house???? Do neighbors call the police if they hear what sounds like shoes?

Well, you can wear shoes; there isn’t a fine that you will get like if you flipped off a driver. It’s just considered impolite.
When you visit a home here, they will usually have slippers for you to wear. At least that has been my experience. Whenever I have someone in my home, I always insist that they keep their shoes on. They usually refuse. I had a student come over the first time and there was a discussion if she should leave her shoes on. I didn’t have slippers, so I said no. I had another friend insist on taking them off and took his socks off, too. Bleh.
When SO is here, his shoes are on the rack outside the door. I really should find a pic because my whole building has shoes outside the apartments. I think this is common around the world.

It is just considered impolite; no police calling. I wear shoes inside if I need to, but I do have a rack outside my door. I have been told that my shoes were too loud by my landlord. I’m getting ready and I choose my shoes and get my bag and head out the door. This takes all of two minutes walking around with shoes.
Calling the police doesn’t happen with shoes, but calling the police happens with a whole bunch of other things. For example, too much noise during certain times (Sundays, holidays, after 10 PM and before 7 AM, and between 1-3 PM are not really acceptable; it’s actually written into lease contracts). You might get some old lady calling up to complain. Heck, I had some old lady in the city I previously lived in write a letter to the building manager that I used too much garlic when I cooked. I made sure to make a nice fish dish after I got that letter.
To the OP, you can also get one of these and it takes up less space. You can get smaller sizes, too.
