need guidance to get daughter assessed
Im concerned that my daughter has executive functioning deficits and also some emotional issues as well. She is an outgoing, intense, very bright 8 yrs old and just started 3rd grade. Teacher, school psych no help when I stated concerns, specifically regarding her difficulties with following limits set at home, impulsivity, etc. I don't know where to start. Should she see a behavioral specialist, have a neurological assessment done, a psych assessment done. I would appreciate any recommendations. I just want to get help to become less impulsive, more organized, more mindful and understand that she has to follow our rules at home (which aren't too strict) without the ongoing full blown outbursts.... I was looking into a 2E consult but I don't know if shes appropriate, teacher didn't really seem too receptive to the idea...

How is her behavior at school? If she’s ok there, they may resist doing testing. It wouldn’t hurt to have an evaluation done by a developmental and behavioral pediatrician, but the wait times are typically very long. I can refer you to a wonderful 2e LCSW but just for support, not diagnosis. Google dabrowski's overexcitabilities and see if that strikes a chord.

Re: need guidance to get daughter assessed
I would def. follow up with a pediatric neurologist. Depending on the doctor it may take some time to get an appointment.
In the meantime, I would also take her for a comprehensive eye exam with a OD (developmental optometrist). Through my own experience I've come to learn vision is MUCH more than 20/20. Executive functioning delays, impulsivity, etc is all related to visual organization, how our eyes interpret information, sensory input, etc.

Re: need guidance to get daughter assessed
Is it just behaviors at home or does she has behavior issues in school as well. I would suggest calling and getting an appointment for any of the types of doctors you want to see asap since those specialist generally have very long waits. My dd has been seen by developmental pediatrician and a neuropsychologist and I the neuropsychologist was much more helpful. The testing and the time spent with both my dd and I really was helpful in determining a diagnosis. They evals are very pricey cost $5,600 after insurance but worth it. Sometimes you an get your district to pay for it but I didn't feel like fighting with mine.

Wish I could get an assessment and maybe someone to assist with behavior s at home even if I have to pay privately. All of the ABA specialists I researched don’t offer such services, at least not for her.
