Private testing vs. in school testing

DS who is in 1st grade is having a lot of problems focusing. He zones out in class and does not follow along at all. His teachers are concerned. His kindergarten teacher last year was a little more proactive with him and kept him on his toes so I think that’s why she wasn’t as concerned. But I see his inattentiveness at home also.
My question is- is there a difference between getting him tested at school and going through private testing? I am leaning towards getting an evaluation done privately so he doesn’t miss out on valuable class time. I don’t mind paying out of pocket. Thanks so much!

I think the biggest difference is having too pay and the fact that a school can not diagnose so if you are looking for an official diagnosis - its best to go to your own doctor. The school can label a child with a disability but it is always better to have that official diagnosis in order to receive modifications

You can do both if you want but in order to get any services at school the school will need to evaluate. They will not just take an outside diagnosis without doing some sort of testing (unless medical). I would have the school test and if you need more testing then request it from the school and have them pay.

Re: Private testing vs. in school testing

Go for private testing. It is in the school's best interest not to find any "issues" bc if they do, then they have to provide services and that costs them money. There is an inherent bias in the process. Also, private testing provides with a diagnosis and if the person doing the private testing is good, they will provide many recommendations for home, school, etc based on diagnosis and strengths and weaknesses.
