Has anyone redone parquet flooring?

We closed on our new home last week and there is a TON of updating to do! The carpets were ripped up and it turns out there is parquet flooring underneath. I’m wondering if refinishing it is an option?

I’m not crazy about the look but if it saves us money (and I know there’s a chance it won’t), I think I’d go for it.

I took a picture but I have no idea how to post it on here lol

You can, but it depends how thin the material is. You may wind up spending just as much to refinish than to put something inexpensive down instead.

I just refinished parquet flooing. Saved me about 7-8K over putting down new floors. If it's solid wood they can be refinished, assuming they haven't been widdle down to nothing already.

How much did it cost per sq ft? And can you recommend a company?

I would put laminate over it. Which sounds crazy I guess, but I really don’t like the look of parquet. It’s also only in half of the house, so I’d have different flooring in the other rooms.

My one thought is to keep it in the bedrooms & do laminate over the portion in the hallway. Then at least the hallway matches the main part of the house.

I would leave it in the bedrooms, personally. You can always put area rugs.

I would also look into vinyl plank. Some of them are really beautiful.

I have hardwood in my living room, dining room and guest room, vinyl plank in my kitchen, vinyl sheet in my basement and laminate in my upstairs bedrooms. I personally like the vinyl much better than the laminate and tbh I might even like it better than the hardwood because its zero maintenance.

I think it was $2.50 a sq foot. Honestly, I did not like the company I used. So I wouldn't recommend. I don't love parquet either. I just didn't want to spend the money on new floors and I live in a coop so would've needed a licensed contractor to install them so it was significantly more $$.

I would definitely refinish them, just don't go too dark because some of the details may not look at nice. I personally like the bare floor look, and parquet can look very nice!

We did get them refinished! They turned out great! They definitely grew on me and it saved us a TON of money. We kept it natural, no stain, and it was about $750 for 500 sq ft.

I wish they were in the living room/dining room, too..but that had linoleum. We’re getting luxury vinyl for that room and our great room.
