So is anyone's school doing this? I received a flyer from the PTA that you can pay to have someones house "flagmingoed" -- Essentially someone shows up after dark and litters your lawn with plastic flamingos.
It is a way for the PTA to raise money but ultimately a popularity contest to see who flamingos who. I think this is ridiculous. As i drove to work today i saw 4-5 houses flamingoed -- and of course my kid is asking me why our house hasnt been done. I wonder how many ppl pay to have their own house done so their kid doesnt feel left out.
What do you think about this?

I'm not a fan of anything that turns into a popularity contest.
I think it's an awful idea when it comes to kids of that age.

I hate the sound of this. I hate this aspect of having school aged kids. I work so I am not active and visible in the PTA, the moms who are are are always in the school building, I went on a school trip with my son and it was hard to distinguish who was staff and who was PTA that is how much power they have in the school. I work in a school, a MS, so it is different bc of grade level but also we do not allow parents this power. Sorry I went off on a random tangent, but this just made me think of how it would go in my kids school which is I could only hope a friend of mine would flamingo us since I am not in the clique.

Re: You've been Flamingoed!

I agree with you ladies... Don't like the idea at all.
Don't like that it's a popularity contest either.
I'm very active on our PTA and would NEVER bring this up. We were just talking about getting a "buddy" bench for kids who don't have anyone to play with.
Why make kids feel sad for being left out.

Thank goodness my boys aren't like that.

Anything that makes someone feel left out it not a good idea.

Personally I would pay for it to be done at our house just for my son to see it. He would love waking up to something like that. Why does it have to be done for other people. We turn things into a popularity contest.

As for the buddy bench, I think it is a terrible idea. Always have. Some kids/people just want to be left alone. I was one of those kids. And forcing other kids to be friends with me, just highligted and made me feel like I did not fit in more. Just let people do their own thing.

Never thought of it that way. Was something another mom brought up at the meeting. Not even sure how it would work or if they're getting it. I know the aides at recess or supposed to monitor and make sure the kids have someone to play with or at least having fun. My older DS plays sports every day at recess so he's happy. My younger son is more independent. Will usually play with his friends and say sometimes he just wants to swing alone. LOL As long as he's happy.

You can pay to have it done to yourself, that's what a lot of people do. I know a neighboring district does this. I think it's a super easy way to raise money!

As a PTA President for multiple schools for many years, I would never do a fundraiser like this for exactly what was posted above. It turns out to be a popularity contest and I am always thinking about the families that can't afford to do it to themselves, and that is not fair. That being said, it does sound fun and I'm sure that is why the PTA did it and most likely they did just not think of the negative side to it. That is why it is great to go to PTA meetings and communicate to your PTA (even if you can't go to meetings) to show a different side of things that maybe they have not thought of.

We also have multiple buddy benches which work out fabulous. We also have regular benches for those kids that just want to be left alone that day or are just relaxing. When we put in the buddy benches we had a school assembly to explain what they were about and how to be used. It went over great with students and faculty.

What is a buddy bench?

A buddy bench is a bench that says Buddy Bench on it or decorated in a special way. The general rules are:

If you are sitting on the bench …
You are looking for a friend. When someone asks you to play, join them, and always remember to glance over at the school's Buddy Bench to invite new friends to join in on the fun.

If you are not sitting on the bench …
Ask your classmate on the buddy bench to play, and make a new friend today! Keep growing your circle of friends until everyone has someone to play with. :)

my school district cheerleaders do this as a fundraiser and I love it! I think its really cute and fun way for them to raise money. I guess I can see some kids getting upset they didn't get it done to them but I tell my kids not everyone gets a chance every year and it is what it is. I think its a great fundraiser!

I was thinking this too. I hope they come pick them up to reuse them on another house. What a giant waste of plastic.

The district I know that does this moves them from house to house as people sign up. They aren't one time use flamingos. And they say "You've been flocked" on the notice that comes with the Flamingos.

Our school does something similar but with the school theme for the graduating 5th graders as a fundraiser. The kids love to help do it as much as the house being done that night. We also BOO during Halloween, not a fundraiser but fun!

I think you only sit on the bench if you want somebody to come and ask you to play. Otherwise you sit on a regular bench or in the grass.

Ha! That’s actually really cute sounding!

Lawn ornaments all over sounds like a really great conversation starter and it’s probably a blast to do. It’s more fun/ rewarding than a raffle IMO as long as cost isn’t crazy! I agree... I would pay for ourselves and make a rule of only flocking once!

Totally different topic: Buddy benches are a cute idea but don’t really work past K/1st grade.

All I know is DH has been working really hard to bring our lawn back to life after several seasons of disease and a horrible lawn. He wouldn't be too happy to wake up to plastic shit staked all over the delicate regrowth.
