And honestly, the more I think about this, I don't care that they "performed a service". It was the wrong service.
So with that line of thinking if I hire a guy to redo my kitchen and instead he goes up on the roof and replaces my roof, I should still pay him for replacing my roof? Because he performed a service? Even though it wasn't the service I asked for?

You are right, I shouldn't have to pay for their mistake.

The funny thing is that in the town my boyfriend lives in gives black mulch away for free, I of course wanted red and was willing to pay for it so that is why I went through my landscaper. Lesson Learned.

I would specifically mention this to him too (to let him know you could've gotten black mulch for free).

i would tell them they either give you red mulch or you will not be paying them esp. for $140. my DH put mulch down himself. the bags were 5 for $10 not sure how much you need but thats a lot of money for not to have what you want!

I would expect them to come back, take the crap I didn't want away, and then give me what I paid for

Yes. Exactly.
