Travel alert in Bahamas

I was just looking into going for a few days and ran across info on a travel alert issued in March or April. Does anyone know about it? Would you still travel there?

Travel alert in Bahamas

I feel like there is always a travel alert in these carribbean countries. Where are you traveling to in the Bahamas? I was just there with my kids solo to go to Atlantis, and never felt unsafe.

I didn't even know until I went on fodors site for something and it was on there. Then I looked into it. I have a JetBlue credit I have to use so looking for a quick trip. Was looking to check out the new Baha Mar resort on Cable Beach.

I'm sure that resort- and Cable beach- will be fine as that is a very heavily touristy area.
What was the travel alert in regards to?

It said level 2 and said it was due to robberies and sexual assaults, I believe.

So level 2 is only 1 step above take normal precautions. Level 1 is like everywhere, every day. So I don't think it's all that bad.

I read this:

A Level 2 travel advisory urges travelers to "exercise increased caution." Other countries with a Level 2 advisory include Serbia and Belize, where crime is a concern, as well as Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Belgium and France, which are at heightened risk for terrorist attacks.

So pretty much a lot of places have that for one reason or another.

Travel alert in Bahamas

Level 2 is the same as DR, Mexico, Jamaica etc. All places people said they wouldn't go.

I probably wouldn't go to the Bahamas either- but I'm just giving her the details of what it means and the different levels.
I have been to the Bahamas and wasn't thrilled with it either.
But nothing can be worse than Jamaica for me, so there's that.

I've been to Mexico (years ago), DR (recently) and Bahamas. I agree that I didn't care for the Bahamas -- not because I didn't feel safe though. I used to love Mexico but now there is no way in hell I'd go there. I just went to DR. I didn't feel unsafe in any way. But with what just happened it makes you think. Would I go back there -- I don't know.
I am going to stick with Bermuda, Aruba, and St Maarten for now!

Edited to add: to the OP, I think you would be fine going to the Bahamas. Just use precautions like you would anywhere. I am sure people coming from there get the same speech when they come into NYC.
I hate that we have to feel this way :(

Bermuda was the nicest Island I have been to . I felt safer there than in NY to be honest!

Re: Travel alert in Bahamas

Honestly anything can happen anywhere. Wasn't a woman visiting from another country when she was run down by a car in NYC walking on the sidewalk?!
You always just have to be alert and cautious. Heck, I have my eyes open walking around the local mall.
Crazies everywhere! It is a scary world, but it's not going to stop me from traveling to places. No, I'm not just going anywhere, but we were just in Mexico a few weeks ago and I felt totally safe.
I'm not going anywhere anytime soon since we were just away, but if we do plan another trip I can't let all the fears stop me.

Not sure which way to go. I have a credit with Jetblue and I have to book something in the next two weeks before it expires. I can book for any future date. Im going to fla next week and Im considering canceling my southwest tickets and using this credit so I have used it. Then I will have the Southwest credit for the next year

Re: Travel alert in Bahamas

You have to be careful, no matter where you go. We went To Mexico just recently, and had a great time, and felt safe even leaving the resort. We just stayed with our tour the whole time. You cant even be safe if you travel to Europe.

Oh yes. But I just spent an arm and a leg in Miami and was floored by the prices there too. $22 for a burger, $15 for a kids' pb&j! Chat Icon
So nothing shocks me on vacation anymore.

That is outrageous!!

How were the prices there compared to Jimmy Buffets? You went there right? I still want to plan a trip there with the kids next year!

Miami was more expensive than any other place I have been, resort wise. Jimmy Buffet's was average for a resort. Not super cheap, but Not out of control. We ate and drank by the pool there every day and didn't feel we needed to take out a second mortgage. Chat Icon
Miami is truly insane. It's known for that too I think. Prices are ridiculous. Not sure why.
