Montauk via LIRR....stuff to do
We want to go to Montauk via LIRR. Apparently monthly LIRR customers can bring anyone with them for $1 (up to 4 people) every Saturday June-August and it doesn't matter what stations are printed on the monthly ticket. (Google LIRR Summer Saturdays 2019)
We've never been to Montauk. Is it hard to get around without a car? I heard they don't have uber/lyft there and we have a child who needs a carseat. Wondering if it's worth the trip without a car. What can we do? How far is the beach? The lighthouse? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t see how you could manage without a car unless you were going go take a taxi everywhere. The light house is probably about 5-6 miles from the train.
The taxis are pricey since they have a monopoly. We went by boat once and needed to take a taxi from the marina into town, about 3 miles, it was $20 each way.

Its not very walkable. Plus if you are going to the beach you'd have to drag all your beach stuff

Yeah I wouldn’t take the train. Getting around you would need to taxinit or stay in the town area and that won’t entertain you all day. Plus the train out there takes forever and a day. My son would not be happy. It’s hard enough on a car ride but the train would be torture

It’s not very walkable unless you plan to just stay in the heart of the town. But there are Ubers around. I used one there last summer.

Re: Montauk via LIRR....stuff to do
I grew up in Montauk.
People take the train ALL THE TIME. You can cab it into town and then basically everything is IN town, including the beach
If you pack well for the day, wear comfy shoes it is 100% do-able

My son has taken the LIRR with me, has taken the Jitney with me, and we've driven. At least for the first two, you're moving

Re: Montauk via LIRR....stuff to do
As someone posted, it's possible to do it. Realize that the LIRR station is not in the center of town, though, so you will have to take a cab into town. Then you can walk to restaurants and down to the beach.
But, the truth is, you aren't saving any money if you take the train and then have to take a cab. I'd just drive there.
