Quick invite question

So SO’s brother has a bday party planned for tomorrow at his house (they usually just get take out for everyone). Invites were sent via Whatsapp two days ago. I didn’t get one, but SO has said that is what they do in his family. I asked SO to ask if it was OK that I come along.

Was that rude? SO says that I don’t need an invitation and that +1s are included.

I usually go to his family events, so this is nothing new to me. It’s just an informal event. SO’s bday was a few days ago, so they usually just do a combined party. I understand this bc my sister and I have a few days apart from our birthday (actually the same exact days, and my sister and I did the same thing), so it doesn’t seem like a big deal, but I’m still wondering.

Re: Quick invite question

I feel like that's prob pretty normal. I invite SO's sister over sometimes and it's with the intention that her and her BF will come.

Quick invite question

If its for a family dinner for a birthday I don't see the need to send the info to both individuals.

Quick invite question

I would almost find it more odd if they invited you separately from SO. What if SO couldn't make it for some reason - would you still go? I think it' totally normal to just send the invite to your SO

Re: Quick invite question

It's normal. When we have family get togethers we don't invite each person individually. We invite one person and expect them to bring their husband/wife/children/bf/gf/whatever.

Quick invite question

i tend to overthink the smallest of things... but for this one, i say it's a non-issue.
my family does the same thing. we have a group text for informal invites in the same way you described this.

I don't think it's a big deal. My SO's sister always just tells one of us

Quick invite question

Well when I text my brother to invite him to something and vice verse it’s a given that spouse and kids are included

It’s funny that you mentioned this. His father is always saying just come down to the Alps and hang out with him and his wife. I love his father and it’s great to have someone here, but sometimes I can’t understand them because of the accent/dialect. I’d rather my SO be there with me. My SO doesn’t see his dad too often, so he goes through me to see him. They have a strange relationship.

So I went to the party and it was fine. I’m really starting to feel like a part of their family. The brother and his wife have a new baby and I held it for the first time. They were all like you are next, blah, blah. They all went out for a walk and I stayed back with the Grandmothers and helped out with the baby. However, I don’t think I want children, so the comments were a bit annoying.

But it was all fine and I got an invite to the christening. That made me feel a bit better.

It’s nice to have family when you are so far away from your own family.
