Update— Ok to give a gift card?
Friend invited us to her kid’s 1st bday backyard bbq this weekend. Invite said “No gifts please— just come to celebrate.” I totally get it as I understand not wanting to have to find space for a ton of gifts after a party. But I don’t want to give nothing at all, so in this case would you think it’s appropriate to give a bday card with a Target gift card of maybe $40 so she can get him whatever she wants?
Update: It seemed that most people brought gifts anyway. There was a table of wrapped presents. I was surprised to see that! I gave the gift card inside a bday card. I guess there’s no point in putting “no gifts “ since people generally ignore it.

Target gift cards are always appreciated and always useful. It gives them a lot of flexibility. When my kids were younger, I'd use them towards diapers, or clothes, or whatever they needed. Now that my kids are a little older, they love getting them so they can pick out a toy.

Ugh I really hate when people do that, especially for kids parties. It's so awkward. I usually give a check and write on the memo line "college beer fund". I think a gc is fine too.

Don't beat me up here, but I kind of feel like when adults say no gifts for their own bday, they mean it (although I still give something). When a parent says no gifts for a child, they are asking for money, not literally nothing.

That’s what made me hesitate and ask here. But I would feel bad about giving nothing and wonder what most guests will do.

Really? I would never think that. Maybe Im dense
In this case she says "just come celebrate". So I take that as they really dont want anything.

That was my thinking too. She can get necessities if he doesn’t need more toys. Target has everything.

Honestly, I would respect their wishes and do no gift. We are a no gift family. We honestly just want to celebrate special occassions. We don't want anyone to feel obligated to bring a gift.

Re: Ok to give a gift card?
I would not do the gift card - no gift means no gift. I get that you feel uncomfortable but that shouldn't matter bc in this case it's about respecting the other person's wishes and not about doing what will make you feel better.
We have a bday party tomorrow for a 5 year old and it says no gifts so we wont be giving a gift. This mom doesn't like clutter and doesn't want to have to find space for a bunch of toys and things.

Totally agree.. especially about respecting wishes vs your discomfort level.

I am lazy and prefer giving a gc or cash and I also prefer to receive it. I would feel uncomfortable going somewhere empty handed and I doubt any friend/family member would think badly of you if you went against their wishes.
I feel with baby showers and baptism parents might feel bad asking for another gift within a year.

I would not bring a gift. I might feel differently if the child was older, but the child is one. They don’t even know what gifts are.

Re: Ok to give a gift card?
I would respect that they said no gift and not bring one.
I’m a no gift person since I always feel awkward about getting gifts. I’m picky and if someone gets me something, then I have to fake liking it. I hate that feeling. SO and I say no gifts with each other, then last month he went out and got a gift for our anniversary. It was a bracelet. He got me a bracelet two years ago, and I had to fake liking it because I don’t really like bracelets. Now he thinks I like them and he got another. And it’s yellow gold. I don’t like yellow gold.
Anyway you get my point. There is a reason why they are asking for no gifts.
Why don’t you donate to a charity that they might feel close to?

I'll admit that I feel awkward when asked not to bring a gift, but I would respect the parents' wishes and not bring one at all.
