Re: Mother killed her twin girls

This world is horrific to new mothers. Childcare costs, lack of support, other judgey moms, body comments, lack of access to health insurance or ability to afford it. Who is supposed to watch the kids while you go the the psychiatrist? Some people have no one and can’t afford a babysitter or their anxiety rules out a stranger watching the kids. The self doubt and hatred, feeling bad your kids have to have you as a mother, then....psychotic break, particular to those with preexisting issues they were to ashamed to share to begin with. It’s no surprise this happens.

This is our crappy world, some are born into a wonderful support network, some create it, some never get to do either.

I pray for the poor babies and the grieving families, but as we all know, thoughts and prayers don’t work in this world

The stress of twins (plus I think she had an older son) and being a single mom must have put her past her breaking point. Terrible that those poor babies suffered. Two is a very difficult age with toddlers all over the place. In the paper the mom says she offered to help watch the babies, but her daughter refused it. So sad Chat Icon

I read that she was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder as a teen and also suffered from depression & anxiety for many years. It's horrible that our society does not offer sufficient support for those with any type of mental illness - and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that raising twins exacerbated what she was already dealing with.

Yes. And she is young. I can't imagine being a single mother with 3 toddlers at that age. I am 41, married and have 3 kids, 2 of which are toddlers, and they take me to the brink regularly.
I hope this poor girl gets the help she needs.

Mother killed her twin girls

I remember calling and looking for a therapist a few years ago. I called the 15 or so providers approved by my insurance to see if I could get an appt. I received 1 phone call back. That therapist told me that she had an appt available on Wed at 1130. I told her I work at 1130. Her exact words to me then were, " Well I guess I can't help you. Hope you find someone who can. Have a great day." And she hung up.

This is the state of mental health care in America and we wonder why people don't get help. I believe that many seek it but hit walls and roadblocks along the way and feel so defeated that the never find someone to actually try to help them.

When I was at my first post-partum appointmnent I was struggling to find the words to tell my doctor that I didn't feel right and wasn't enjoying motherhood and didn't feel like I was bonding. She asked if I felt like I was going to harm myself or the baby and I said no. She said then it's nothing to worry about.

That's the baseline for post-partum mental health. Whether or not you're going to harm yourself or the child and not the enormous spectrum of emotions in between.
