We did IVF with my middle child. She has brown eyes and my husband and I both have light eyes. She looks a lot like me so I always say I think there was a mix up at the lab with the sperm. Sometimes I do actually have doubts even thou I have been assured by my pediatrician that eye color is not as simple as 10th grade biology makes it seem, especially since my husbands eyes are hazel and not true blue like mine. She also looks exactly like my naturally conceived son.... However there is always going to be the tiniest bit of doubt when you do IVF! at least for me... A friend of mine did a genetic test back before ancestry and 23 and me existed, just to make sure they got the right kid. I would not test until they are much much older because I do think that you open yourself up to having to give your child to the biological parents. I feel horrible for this couple.

Yet, there are so many green-eyed and blue-eyed children born to brown -eyed parents. It is definitely not a science.

And yes, this is an awful thing for anyone to happen to.

Yep my brown eyed cousin and her husband have two kids, one with blue and one green, the 3rd brown. The two with the light eyes favor her, our paternal grandfather had blue eyes and light hair.

My husbands brother has blue eyes, no one in his family has them. He looks exactly like the dad but with blue eyes.

It is very easy for two brown eyed people to have a blue eyed child though because brown is dominant and blue is recessive. Two blue eyed people can not have a brown eyed baby though. I guess the issue is that my husbands eyes are technically not blue, they are hazel, however they are very light so it is very strange that she has brown eyes. Some times I try to convince myself they are hazel but they are brown. Either way, wouldn't change the fact that I love her and she's our daughter. I just wouldn't want someone who may have contributed some DNA to her to think they could fight for some sort of custody. That's why I would rather wait until she's 18. However she looks exactly like my son she's probably ours!

But a blue eyed parent and a green eyed parent can have a brown eyed child, that's me, so pretty much anything is possible. And yes, both my parents are my biological parents unfortunately. My life would have been a 1000% times easier if my father wasn't my father, but I digress!

I'm curious about the couples who are the biological parents of those babies. I know people often keep embryos frozen for years. Can you imagine if you froze them in your 30s. Now you're 50 and someone hands you a baby! I can't even imagine!

OMG you are right but I would tend to think that it was probably someone who was currently going thru IVF as well based on how the embryos are stored. However you never know... Also what if they already have the family that they want and didn't want more children or are divorced???

Two blue eyed parents can definitely have a brown eyed child. It's possible because both parents are carriers of the brown eye trait. There's also science to back up that it's not dependent just on one chromosome, so yes, it's very possible.

My sis and BIL are blue eyes and their DD is brown eyes. No IVF for them.

Re: Crazy, shocking story

I did hear about this and it's heartbreaking.

I'm not really sure how this happened since the couple lives in NY but the clinic is in CA. Why would a couple in NY use a clinic on the other side of the country? And what were the logistics for that? IVF is intense and takes 6+ weeks - and that's only after all the testing is complete, which can easily take another month. It's not like you could fly to CA for a one time visit or anything.

FWIW, any legit clinic is SUPER careful about this happening. Before anything is done, you need 2 witnesses and the patient to sign off on any specimens. All specimens are labeled with names and unique identifying numbers. You are also asked to verbally approve everything and then sign off. The chances of a wrong embryo transfer at a legitimate IVF clinic should be near 0.

People will go through anything to have a child. We did IVF and I am terrified of flying, but I would have flown anywhere if I thought there was a doctor who could get me pregnant. My friend (who lives in Florida) flew to Colorado for her treatments because the doctor is world famous for having high success rates.

I had it wrong. One of the couples whose baby was one of the “twins” has spoken out. They got their baby back when he was 6weeks old. They are also bringing a lawsuit. So heartbreaking for everyone involved

Except NYC has world-renowned reproductive specialists. It's not like they were from the middle of nowhere.

You WOULD think fertility clinics take the proper precautions, double and triple check everything and hold themselves accountability. I personally had a horrifying experience where my embryos were "accidentally destroyed" at a local baby factory on long island. I had no ground for recourse whatsoever.....nowhere near as horrifying as this story but unfortunately I'm not surprised whatsoever.

Excuse me? This is a chat board for people to post their opinions. Mine is that this should not happen at a reputable clinic. It seems strange from a NY couple to travel cross country for treatment.

Pardon me for not having all of the perfect comments like you do. Right? Chat Icon

I read that they selected this clinic for it's extremely high success rates. There are plenty of good fertility clinics in this area, however people have lots of different reasons for selecting the clinic that they do. It just makes you wonder how this clinic is deriving their extremely high rates. I know there are clinics that won't take certain patients because they don't want low odds to affect their success rates and other clinics that people seek out despite their low success rates specifically because they treat people with low odds.

Also California is big for surrogacy, maybe that was another option they were exploring as well. Tbh if I wanted a baby so bad and the best clinic in California had a success rate .1% better than best in NYC, I would travel to. IVF journey is expensive and emotionally taxing on these couples. People go to extreme lengths to build their family.

It just doesn’t seem odd to me at all. The only strange and crazy thing about this story is how did the clinic screw up so badly.

Well, it seems odd to me. I went through years of fertility treatment, including IVF. Yes, I would have done anything to have a baby. But start-to-finish, IVF is a months-long process with many visits in between. It took us 8 months from when we decided to do IVF before we actually had the procedure. It would have been near impossible to fly across the country for every monitoring appt. That's all I'm saying - that I found it strange they would have gone to CA for treatment. There are plenty of very reputable clinics in NY.

I see nothing odd about it at all.

Maybe the top notch NY clinic didn't work for them; so they opted for CA; where their research and success rates brought them there.

Maybe they did all the monitoring here in NY; but flew to CA for retrieval/transfer. It happens more often than you think so I am pretty surprised that you are surprised. LOL

Many couples fly to different states; even out of the country to follow an RE. If they can, then why not, right?
