Would love your opinion on this

Hi all !

Ok, long story short I booked a vacation with a travel agent for dates in October with extended family coming also.

The NIGHT before, 12 hours before we are due to leave I see my daughters (minor) passport is expired. I never thought to look at hers, since mine and my husbands were all done on the same day. I didn't know minors expire 5 years, were adults are 10 years.

- We had to cancel the trip and watch the family still go, I cried for 12 hours, disappointed everyone.

I feel 100% responsible for not checking ALL passports.

Do you feel the Agent is responsible ? - Don't we hire them to look over everything and handle the paperwork end?

T.I.A.

No way. That is on you. I feel badly for you, but keeping your documents is your responsibility.

No, sorry to say, but definitely not. I have never had a TA look at my passport. That's not their job.

Did this just happen? I think you can make an emergency application if you physically go to the office in NYC and you can get it that same day.

I thought so too - some others said it is on the Travel agent to pick that up.

We had insurance and are waiting to see what happens and then re-book, we already file for the passport.

Agreed

And yes you can do this, it happened to a friend of mine with her son in 2018, they went and waited and got it the same day, the day before they left for Italy.

No, that is your responsibility. There should even be something written on the tickets that you need to have your travel documents up to date.

Re: Would love your opinion on this

I’m sorry you experienced that and feel bad for you and your family. Something similar happened to me two weeks ago when I was going to India.

I also feel bad because you could’ve gotten a 1 day passport in NYC or also PA and maybe push the flight by a day?

My sister had to do this and went PA, and recently my boss was going to Tahiti and couldn’t go when they saw her husbands passport was going to expire in month. They moved their flight and wen to NYC to get the same day passport.

I also don’t think the travel agent is liable at most maybe letting you guys know you needed a passport but it’s up to the travelers to make sure they are not expired or aren’t going to expire within 6 months.

Sorry about your trip Chat Icon

It is your responsibility to check but in the future you can get a passport the same day. You can go to NYC or Stamford, CT.

TAs are not responsible for making sure your information is up to date. They do need to tell you you need it, which it seems they did. Unfortunately, you are responsible to make sure they are valid.

It sucks but it's your responsibility. FYI: There is a passport office downtown Manhattan that turns around passports in hours. I had to go one time to get DD a passport in less than 2 weeks and there were people there with flights leaving the same day. You pay extra but it's better than losing out on your trip.

Re: Would love your opinion on this

Thank you all for your input. We did have the option to go to CT the next day to get the passport in person, I was told NY appt's were sold out. But if we got the passport same day and traveled the next day, the ticket was increased to $1200 for 3 of us, and we couldn't do that. Thank goodness we had insurance and will be getting our $$ back, hopefully soon and will re-book.

I sure learned my lesson, but had no idea kids passports expired in 5 years.

If it makes you feel ANY better (probably not...lol), this post means a LOT to me. I had NO IDEA kids passports expired sooner than adults. I just checked my kids passports and they expired 8 months ago! We don't have any travel planned until the Spring but it would not have even occurred to me if I didn't see this. THANK YOU!

YES!!! That does make me feel better that my post helped you! Def start the process to get new ones - you can’t even renew, have to do from scratch !

Also know that if you are traveling international, your Passport should have an expiration date > 6 months. A lot of people don't know that as well. Canada I believe is ok if 3 months.

And you need a Visa if you are traveling to India.. just want to put that out there again.Chat Icon Chat Icon
