Cat Adoption- UPDATE
As you may know, we recently lost our 13 y/o pittie. We're not ready for another dog with a 3 y/o and 8 month old at home and busy work schedules, but hopefully in a few years we'll have a dog again. But the house feels empty and I always wanted my kids to grow up with pets. So we're planning to get a kitten and surprise the kids (well DD really, DS doesn't even know what a cat is ) with the kitten on Christmas morning.
That being said, we're not sure where to look to adopt! We've adopted several pets from North Shore, but I wanted to see what else was out there. We're located in Lynbrook, but willing to travel a bit.
Also, it's been awhile since I've lived with a cat... let me know if there's anything I really need or something really cool that I might not know about. On my list I've got:
-Covered Litter Box and scooper -Cat "Cave" Bed -Cat tree with perches and ropes -Elevated dishes -Cat toys: balls with bells/feathers; feather "fishing rod" type toys, and one of those roller circuit toys that they chase through the tunnels

Re: Cat Adoption
I got my kittens through Petco- they usually have the cages where they have some pets from local rescues and shelters. They have kittens often. Check your local Petcos and Petsmarts for sure.

Re: Cat Adoption
Thanks! We did check out Petco this weekend- for more fish stuff actually... DD won a goldfish at a street fair and OMG this is the healthiest effing fish I've ever seen. He's tripled in size! But we looked at the cats and they had maybe 4 older cats, no kittens. But I'll keep them in mind!

Re: Cat Adoption
Some Veterinarians have cats and kittens up for adoption. My vet has a gorgeous cat that someone dumped on their doorstep. She is pure white but has no teeth so they are having a difficult time aging her. She could be anywhere from 2-10. Recently spayed too.
eta : DH will not let me get her. Once I saw the post on FB, I was ready to leave the office to get her. My spoiled cat would also have a fit if I brought in another cat.
There's Bide-A-Wee too.

Cat Adoption
I would look for kittens in your area on Petfinder and you can see what is available from a variety of rescues.

Yeah, that's what my plan is mostly. I just figured I'd ask around if someone used a rescue they really loved. Thanks!

I went there recently but the cat I was looking for was with a foster. But they were great.

Thanks!! I know them from their Queens location, but didn't know they had a Freeport location. I'm going to check them out.

Re: Cat Adoption
we adopted from Bobbi and the Strays earlier this year. Just so you know, they are very strict about placing their pets in good homes and will do a home check before you can adopt any cat, so you probably won't be able to walk in and walk out with a cat in one visit.

That's very good to know! Thanks! I did put in an application in a few places in anticipation of adopting, maybe I'll do that there as well.

Re: Cat Adoption
Just an update- we adopted TWO kittens from Last Hope Animal Shelter in Wantagh. The cats were brother and sister and we couldn't leave one there alone. They were wonderful! We're keeping them a secret til Christmas morning. I can't wait to see my daughter's face when she sees there are two. She only asked for one.

Re: Cat Adoption- UPDATE
Thanks!!! I was shocked, my DH was the one who said let's get them both! He was like you're really going to break one's heart at Christmas?! Seeing them play together and snuggle, I'm glad we took them both.
We haven't decided on names yet. I wanted to name them something funny like what my DD would come up with- Pizza & Taco. DH did not like those. So far we're thinking Goose (from Captain Marvel) and Elliott- from Pete's Dragon as my DD recently saw the movie for the first time and cried HYSTERICALLY at the end because she wanted a pet dragon But I'm not totally sold on these.

Congratulations! You are going to have a wonderful Christmas morning with such an amazing surprise
As for the names, a friend in Mexico adopted 2 kitties a while ago and she named them Tequila and Mescal

Yes, enquiring minds want to know!
How on earth did you keep 2 kittens a secret?
They always try to get you to adopt two cats. It is actually easier to get two kittens. They keep themselves entertained. I struggled with my last kitten. I still think it would have been better and easier if I brought his sister home. But I already had two cats at home, so I couldn’t.

We kept the kittens at my parents house for a few days and brought them to our house on Christmas morning. It worked out great! The kittens got to decompress a bit at my parents house so they weren't as shy by the time Christmas rolled around. They're settling in pretty well. We have to take them this Thursday to get spayed/neutered.
DD was over the moon. We let her open all her other gifts then brought her up to our bedroom for a special surprise and opened up the boxes. So far, the male cat (Elliot) is very stand-offish. He wants nothing to do with us except at feeding time. But the girl cat (Goose) is the sweetest cat I've ever met. She follows us around the house, rubs against us, is a purr machine. She's climbed on both my DS and DD's laps and she handles the rambunctious kids well, though we keep trying to make sure DD is calm around them so they don't get scared.

Re: Cat Adoption- UPDATE
Just as another update- the two cats have adopted by DD. The boy, Elliott, still wants nothing to do with my DH or I, but my DD can pet him as much as she wants. And Goose continues to be sweet as can be to everyone, but especially my DD.
Here's my DD and Goose snuggling up!

What a great picture. Love them, enjoy them, spoil them.
My 15 year old girl is such a sweet thing, always looking for cuddles and head scratches. Very playful too, loves her toys.

They are SO spoiled. They act more like dogs than cats. While I'm cooking they're just winding around my legs meowing for some food. My DS is only 10 months and likes to feed them from the high chair. And they are definitely the hunters I was hoping for. I don't know if any of you saw my post on the main board about cave crickets but I've only seen two since the cats arrived and they were both DEAD! Of course, this doesn't bode well for the fish we have- I had to put a book over the top of the tank so Goose doesn't dip her paw in the water in the filter opening. I always thought cats were easier than dogs, and in a lot of ways they are, but there's no stopping a cat. Like I gated off the kitchen and the dog couldn't come in- these cats are unstoppable.
