I thought of this thread on Saturday because I took my dog (and my kids!) to Petco with a gc she got from my parents for Christmas and made sure SHE picked out the treats she wanted and didn't use it for dog food

I will openly admit that I have used their gift cards to buy them things that were NOT toys! IF my kids get a target card, I might save it for them to pick something out later but I have also put it towards essentials like clothes. Doesn't make me a bad mom. I without a doubt buy my children lots of wants so if I put a $20 g/c towards pajamas or tee shirts for my kids, then so be it. If there's extra for a pack of gum for the car, throw it in. I often spend my OWN gift cards on stuff for them too, rather than myself. Until they are old enough to prioritize and save, I'm holding on to them and determining how they are spent.

Now that they are older, they know when they get gift cards and where and how much so they will ask for things to use it for. But when they were younger, the gift card went to whatever we needed it to go towards. They were too young to pick things out or even know what gift they were getting and besides, very rarely if ever do I buy something for my husband or myself so mostly all our expenses are for our kids stuff anyway. I never felt guilty about this. I automatically put money in their bank accounts weekly as well. So if I happen to add milk and eggs when I'm buying them clothes at Target using their gift card, so be it. When I give gift cards, I expect that other families do this as well. If someone gave us cash or a check however I would put it directly into their bank account.

My older kids like to go pick out their own things with their gc. When they were younger. I would put the money in their acct & I'd use the gc

I really feel this whole discussion is referring to target cards because nobody is using game stop cards or Google play cards, lol.

But... If you give someone a target gift card for a new baby, wouldn't you expect them to use it towards essentials like diapers?

But that’s an item for the baby. Clothes are for the baby. Toys, books, pacifiers, baby wash, washcloths, etc.

I think most people are referring to parents using the gift card to buy themselves makeup or something else clearly not for the kid.

No one said make up. Most people were saying food, etc.
