Newborn in Winter
If you had a baby during the winter, at what age did you start taking them out of the house - for errands, family events, etc?

7 or 8 weeks. She was a preemie but I think I would have waited that long regardless.

Newborn in Winter
This may not be the norm but I’m overly cautious.... I have a 10 week old and aside from doctors appointments, the baby has not been to any public indoor space. It’s been such a mild winter, I take him outside for walks etc, but not stores yet. A few more weeks I’m thinking.

Re: Newborn in Winter
I took mine out for walks (in decent temps), but not to public places. I waited until LO was 12 weeks to go to public places.

Newborn in Winter
Days. My DS was born late December and it was a warm season like this year. We went everywhere
ETA- my son was in daycare by 8 weeks so a store had way less germs than daycare.

Re: Newborn in Winter
I had a summer baby. But I wonder what single moms with no help do. They have to go out to get food, diapers etc. It's hard to hole up and not leave your house at all for months. I also think about younger siblings bringing home germs from school, adult family members going out and bringing home germs. Doctor's appts with the newborn- the doctor's office is full of germs too

Re: Newborn in Winter
I had a spring and a summer baby, but even if I had winter babies, I still would have had them out. I didn't take my first anywhere and I had horrific PPD. My PPD severely affected how I bonded with my baby in the first few weeks. I definitely think my feelings of isolation attributed to my PPD. I didn't want to experience that every again, so I had my 2nd baby out the day after we came home from the hospital. I was just used common sense about where we went and I made sure that no one got too close.

Newborn in Winter
my only exp is that I'm a winter baby LOL my brother was in need of a winter coat when I was weeks old, she had no choice, bundled me up and took both of us to the store. She reports people were mortified she brought me out at that age, but she had no choice. I survived LOL. She told me she just bundled me up.

Re: Newborn in Winter
I took my winter baby out for walks as soon as I could walk again. I took him to stores about a month in, with a blanket over his seat so people didn't lean over and breath on him. He was my first and I was more cautious.
With my summer baby I was running errands with her the day after I got out of the hospital. It was less about season and more about just being a mom who realizes babies travel.

Re: Newborn in Winter
I had twins in late November. They were full term healthy babies. My ped scared the crap out of us and reminded us any fever over 100.4 in a baby younger than 3 months automatically requires hospitalization. So she just said really think about it if you need to take them somewhere vs you want to. We went to immediate family about a month old. Otherwise it was dr appts. We didn’t take them out really until they were about 3 months old. We did have a couple warm days during the winter they were born and she said it was fine to go for walks around the block for fresh air which we did.

Re: Newborn in Winter
My DS was born the last week in March. I took him out when he was about 2 weeks old on a nice, warm day to go get pizza and ice cream with my stir crazy 3 y/o who I also had home with me on maternity leave. I got comments for that. He was fine.
