learning how to work out
I can't afford a personal trainer, so I'd like to learn effective work outs on the machines at the gym. I know there are websites with sample workouts, but those are really only good for about a month.
Are there any resources that will help me learn more about what I should do over time?

Are you only looking to use machines at the gym or would you be into workout classes? I find I do a lot better when taking classes.upper body, lower, ab, butt & thigh. It’s like having a personal trainer but in a group setting. You’re hitting all the muscles you should and you can ask the instructor for help with form or any questions you have at anytime.
If you only want to do machines, maybe ask the gym staff if there’s a way you can get a few sessions and have them give. You a work out plan for X days a week. It may be worth the $ upfront to have a clear vision of what to do.

I'm not really interested in the classes - they never seem to have the ones I want when I'm available. Apparently there are a lot of stay at home moms around here. Plus I find that my mind wanders a lot and I just wish the class would end. It's why I like the ease of the machines - I can go at my own pace.
I tried setting up some personal training session but all they wanted to do was sell me more sessions and only really gave me a general overview - nothing that I feel would sustain me over months and months.

This may not be the gym for you then. I get them trying to do nothing but sell, because they have to. But there should be someone available to help you in the way you need. Not int he way they sell help. Maybe see if this gym allows outside trainers in with you and you can find someone locally who will do as you ask

I use the PWR Program on the Sweat App. There are also a ton of other programs to choose from on the app (BBG, BBG Stronger, Fierce, and Build). It is $120 a year - not sure if that will fit your budget, but I feel like it is pretty reasonably priced. The trainer, Kelsey Wells, has developed a hypertrophic weight lifting program, which is easy to follow even if you have limited weight lifting experience. The other programs I listed are not all weight lifting. Some are more HIIT based.
My sister does Obe, which is an online program, and loves it. I think it is similarly priced.
