Has anyone seen the race/gender differences with covid19?

NYC released some data yesterday showing about 65% of deaths are from afrian american and hispanic individuals. It's also been said men are twice as likely as women to die and some friends that work in the hospital are saying they would estimate 75% or more people are men in the ICU.

I wonder what is making different races/genders more susceptible than others?

It doesn't sound like a genetic trend, just based on life situations.

Local leaders say the high caseloads are driven by factors including difficulty engaging in social distancing because of household sizes and relatively high levels of residents who are working, thus risking exposure, either because they have been deemed essential employees or have comparatively low income levels and cannot get by without work.

I believe this as well. I don't think it has to do with anything genetic that makes a certain race more susceptible to picking up the virus or dying from it vs another race..

Also- and this is big- you have to look at any pre-existing conditions that might be more prevalent amongst a certain race
For example- i have read that hypertension is more prevalent in certain races- and hypertension is a condition that leads to a higher death rate with this virus.
As is diabetes
As is heart disease.
So if a certain population has more people with these conditions- you will see higher deaths due to the condition, not their race.

Same with sex. Women overall have a longer life expectancy than men. Perhaps men have more of the pre-existing conditions that cause a higher mortality rate with this virus

It's likely socioeconomic factors.

However, I'm sure research can/will be done to look at the severity of the disease in different races. There could be genetic factors that influence the severity of the disease. They're already showing certain genes affect the body's response to the virus.

I've wondered about the socioeconomic factors myself. Some areas of Detroit and Chicago are showing way higher numbers, but many of those who have died were living in some not-so-great conditions and were more likely to have pre-existing respiratory conditions due to the poor living conditions.

Seeing that men are dying twice as much as women is definitely scary, though. Especially since it's a trend they saw in Spain and Italy as well

Influenza has been around for literally hundreds of years. We've been studying it in-depth for about 100 years, so we know a lot about it. With Covid-19, we've only been starting to research everything over the past few months.
Right now, we haven't had enough time, cases, studies, etc., to have definitive trends/triggers/factors/etc. We're getting more information at a pretty fast rate, but we still need more time to find out expansive details.

Keep in mind that men are more likely to be smokers- especially older men in Spain and Italy.

Re: Has anyone seen the race/gender differences with covid19?

A lot in terms of race has to do with pre-existing conditions. Statistically someone who is African American for example is more likely to have diabetes, which puts them at a higher risk of having covid complications.

Additionally, socioeconomic factors come into play. My DH and I can work from home. Others, however, do not have this luxury. They must go to work. We also live in the suburbs where you can go outside and still avoid other people. People in metro areas do not have this luxury. They live in apartment buildings where there is a lot of shared common spaces. Even just think about things like a shared elevator.

Absolutely. But believe me, research is full steam ahead. I've barely slept in 2 weeks....

Definitely an interesting fact that men seem to be more severely effected. Most people that I know who've been diagnosed are men.
