When do you think it will be acceptable to use gift cards again?
I have tons of gift cards to local restaurants we just didn't get a chance to use. I know these guys are struggling so I am not gong to use them now but what would be your marker for when it would be okay to use them again?

I used a gift card at a diner last night. It was given to us as a gift a few weeks ago so I didn't feel bad using it because I know the restaurant received that money just a few weeks ago.
As others said just tip generously.

I have a few and felt the same way, but I think I'm going to use them now. So many places are going out of business, I don't want to take the risk. I'll prob use mine on take out and just tip extra.

I just felt like they are struggling and need cash rather than making good on a gift card that was bought prior to the pandemic. I was thinking that once they are back up on their feet it would be more appropriate to use them but I guess some restaurants have done well during this too so IDK.

That's really kind of you to think about the struggling restaurants. But, in the end, one customer isn't going to make or break their profit, IMO. Just use the cards and tip well.

I get what you mean. I don't have any gift certificates to restaurants right now, but I think maybe I would wait until the spring. I imagine that once outdoor dining can no longer happen in the colder months, restaurants are going to struggle with the limited indoor capacity.
I'm just saying what I might do though; I don't necessarily know what the "acceptable" time is.

I think most places have been open long enough to use gift cards again.
I would use one now. Wouldn’t have when we first started reopening because businesses were trying to make money they lost being closed so long. I know, not our fault but still.
And yes. I’ve been over tipping (though I’m an over tipper in general) our groomers were getting double and sometimes triple tips the first month we reopened. Now it’s back to normal being open since mid May.

use the cards they're paid for and tip what ever you feel, everyone seems to think tipping really well makes a difference if using gift cards, which baffles me.

I know what you mean...the tipping doesn't help the business owner, it helps the servers.
So yeah, using a gift card and tipping extra doesn't really mitigate anything.
But yeah I said to tip extra only because I really feel for the servers as much if not more so than the owners

It's very thoughtful of you to think of that but they've already gotten the money so I would use it and maybe splurge a little by going over the amount if it makes sense.
