Is Socials Distancing even a thing anymore?

I don’t know about you but I haven’t seen much SD the past few weeks. Definitely not on Social Media and even in person. In the strip where we have our shop, there’s a restaurant. Yea servers have masks but it is quite obvious that non of the patrons give a crap about being Socially distant from Others There. I went to grab a pick up order there, mask on, standing far away from the door dash guy picking up. I couldn’t tell you the amount of people legit standing closer and closer, packing the area. I wound up in a corner to get away from them lol all masked so that wasn’t it. But like a legit packed waiting area. It seemed pretty normal, business as usual for them there.

Notice the same at kids sport events when driving by the fields. And the groups of boys on bikes, all with masks on their chins. We went by the marina yesterday and there were ton of people out, some w masks, some not. We didn’t have ours because we were just running to check on something on the boat and had to walk through 2 separate crowds of people all yapping and catching up!

I half jokingly told DH we have to count down 2 weeks to make sure we didn’t catch the rona from the encounters lol

So anyone else seeing this? I don’t see the big fear of school going back when legit everyone I see is living as if there was no Rona at all.

Yes Cape May was insanely crowded when we went 2 weeks ago. More crowded than normal years. Probably because people aren't taking cruises, going to Disney, doing Europe and the Caribbean etc so the local tourist towns are packed.
If you saw the beach there that weekend, it was insane.
It was actually kind of impossible to social distance anywhere in that town just due to the sheer number of people everywhere

Eh, if they were masked, I don't see the problem really. Isn't that what we have had engrained in our heads? If you cant social distance at 6 feet apart, wear a mask? People have been gathering at restaurants near the water where I live all Summer. I check the numbers daily. No spikes.

I have noticed the disregard too. This article helped me to understand others' denial and anger.

https://elemental.medium.com/amp/p/de285d542f4c?__twitter_impression=true

The amount of denial and anger in our society right now is toxic, but all we can do is meet it with compassion and keep our loved ones safe and happy.

ETA: Sympathy for the most unhinged people about these topics helps when you're having to engage with them-online and IRL.

It is definitely on the decline and more and more people are getting together with no masks. The numbers are so low that people are getting complacent. But the numbers are so low because we were following the rules. I am still the mean mom and I am not allowing my daughter to do many of the things her friends are doing but too bad. I need these kids back to school so I'm not risking Covid for the next couple of weeks lol. I will say though that I am more a stickler for masks than social distancing. If they have masks on, I'm ok with them being closer.

I honestly don’t believe that the masks work in close quarters. Articles I’ve seen all over show that particles can still get through the masks unless they are the N95 which are impossible to get. So I’d rather not be shoulder to shoulder with 10 people even with masks. But to each their own

I want to add that I have definitely relaxed a bit with SD but only within my circle. I’ve had dinner with our close friends. No masks in each other’s homes. But not with the friends we know aren’t being careful (total anti maskers who are out and about)

From what I have seen out in stores people are social distancing and wearing masks. The point of the masks is for situations where you can’t social distance so I don’t see a problem while wearing masks

I still wear a mask and we're not really around anyone except if we go shopping or out to eat but as I've said from the beginning, masks and social distancing aren't going to be sustainable long term. It's hard to keep people apart indefinitely, it's not normal human behavior to stay 6 ft apart especially with family and friends. I just think after months and months of this it's not surprising to see people getting lax, I don't think it's being maliciously done, I think people just miss human contact, being together and living a normal life.

Yes and that doesn't make them "angry" or in "denial" like the article posted above implies. That makes them normal, happy, human beings

My read on the article is not that yearning for the way things were evinces anger or denial. I think it's actually trying to explain literal anger and literal denial.

Well something is working because our numbers of people being diagnosed each day in Suffolk County are 2 digits. And it's been that way for a long time. 47 cases in Suffolk yesterday.

I’ve been saying it for a long time, 2 words...herd immunity (natural herd immunity I should specify). That’s the reason why other states where masks are not mandatory and there’s no quarantine are starting to see a decline in numbers. It’s sad we put more faith in a mask than what our immune systems can do.

This. I absolutely agree it’s herd immunity bc of what is stated here. Eventually the more people who have it and fight it, the less of it goes around.

I can see a mask helping in an instance Of sneezes and coughs that for some reason grown people don’t know how to cover. So I’m grateful for a mask for those reasons (and that’s generally speaking bc it’s gross)

My post is really about how I hear people freaking out about school and people having parties (I declined several parties bc I am not ready to be in large groups yet - everyone at their own pace) when I am seeing literally almost no Social Distancing in everyday life. So it’s really weird to me

And they are more optimistic now that the immunity will last.

Re: Is Socials Distancing even a thing anymore?

at work, i am CONSTANTLY having to tell people to step away from one another when they're waiting for something.

as far as out in public, i went out this past weekend... Joanns and then to grab something to eat. there was some serious social distancing taking place at both locations (and masks were worn). my only concern was with the place i picked up lunch. an employee had to be the one to fill your drinks. the cashier went over to fill my drink. i asked her to change her gloves because i saw her handle a lot of cash from different people and then wanted to fill my drink. um, no.

who the hell still carries cash Chat Icon
pandemic or no pandemic, you handle that much cash from different people and then make change... you're not touching my drink.

Yes, I still social distance, wear a mask, and don't go out to eat or shop anywhere as much as I can (still do takeout/curbside). I have seen a few friends and family members, and I have to work outside the home, so I take as many precautions as I can elsewhere.

My daughter and I went to Patchogue last weekend to get a frozen yogurt. Its was ridiculous there, young people in giant packs of 30, bars filled with people, not a single mask in sight, even though large signs said masks were required in all public places in Patchogue. We didn't even get out to get our yogurt.

Is Socials Distancing even a thing anymore?

We still wear masks whenever we are anywhere out in public, both indoor and out. We do go out to eat, but only outdoors, and I do go into grocery stores & Target (and have started taking my kids as well). I want them to get used to being expected to social distance and wear masks while in school.
We only have play dates & get togethers with family and very close friends/neighbors. There are many people we have not seen since March. Once school starts, I may start to be more strict again. I feel, as a teacher and parent, it is my responsibility to be vigilant outside of school hours to lesson the chance of myself or my children getting it and bringing it into school.

Re: Is Socials Distancing even a thing anymore?

I wonder if restaurants on Long Island are allowed more capacity now.
When indoor dining first opened up, it seemed they were at a lower capacity.
We went out to dinner on Saturday night and the place was jammed. All the outside tables taken, but the indoor seating seemed a lot more crowded. We had gone to this place in early July and it felt emptier inside. This weekend they had every table being used inside.

Masks definitely work in close quarters. During the N95 shortage in the hospital we only wore surgical unless in patient rooms, all of us were fine all pandemic. I work on multiple medicine units and share an office with 8 people in the hospital it’s impossible to socially distance so yes they very much work when worn properly. Obviously the N95 is best and I cannot for the life of me get people not wearing masks when with others. I only see my parents and brother and FIL with no mask because I know they are still social distancing

All of this, except I don't do take out that often, I prefer to cook. I do go to Dunkin or Starbucks a few times a week now.

Absolutely true. As I’m sure you know, healthcare workers are testing positive for antibodies are lower rates than the general population.

Masks work, no question.

Similar here. I have just seen my sister and family, and some friends during DS's baseball games, but always with a mask. I have been invited to lunches and see other friends but I haven't gone. Btw, during the baseball games it was common to see other temas with parents keeping no social distance and no masks.
