I have had it
Ok ladies, i'm so done. i've been saying i'll start working on my weight loss for years, and i never ever do it. i'll eat right for a week and then stop. i'll do some exercise for a few days, and then get lazy.
i want to get an exercise bike so i have no excuses but to do it daily. which one do you recommend under $2K? for those who have one, how loud is it? can you feel the floor shake when you use it? i have neighbors below me and want to be as considerate as possible.
help me get into fit mode. any tips on how to start and stay on plan?
thanks!

Peloton reduced the price of their bike to 1895 and they have released a higher end one now as well. You do have to pay for a subscription of 39 a month but I find it well worth it. In addition to the bike content you get access to the app with strength classes, running, yoga, and more. You will also have to get compatible shoes but you don't need the Peloton branded ones.
I cannot recommend it enough. I was a runner but my body doesn't like me to run that much so I got the bike for Christmas and I use it 5x per week.
There are so many different classes of different lengths and levels.
Its also VERY quiet. You cannot hear it at all on the floor below.
You can get a cheaper bike and use the Peloton app with it - but I don't have any experience with different bikes so I can't speak to the quality or noise level.
ETA - I don't know your comfort level with going into stores but you can go to a showroom and try it out.

We recently got a Peleton as well and it's great. Definitely not loud. We got it in July and i was using it a lot but, then we lost power due to Isaias and went away so I'm working now to get back into a routine.

Re: I have had it
The only thing is- I saw someone on my Facebook posted that she just ordered a Peloton about 3 weeks ago and the first delivery date was not until Jan 29th! They have had a huge uptick in demand since gym's closed in March and they are back logged from what I hear.

Thanks ladies. We are looking at the NordicTrack Grand Tour Pro. we need something with a high weight limit, and this one is the only one that comes close.
Any tips on sticking to a diet and exercise plan?

The only diet my husband was able to stick with and lose weight and keep it off was a ketogenic diet. He lost 100 lbs and has kept it off 3 years. Prior to that he tried everything under the sun and never lost more than 20 to 25 lbs and gained it all back and more. Breaking your sugar addiction is very hard but if you can get past the first 2 weeks it becomes easier and you don't crave it anymore. You are also less hungry because your blood sugar isn't spiking and dropping all day It's a lifestyle change though.

I’ve had luck with weight watchers but I find it works better if you do it together (I did it years ago with my roommate).
I need to start sticking to it again.
ETA - I know you said no Peleton but ours came over a month early so you can’t go by their original estimate.

Exercise - you just need to force yourself to do it. If possible, I find if I do it early in the AM it is easier because I don't know what is going on for the beginning and it feels good to have it done early in the morning and not have to worry about it (and feel proud that I did it.)
Diet - You need to find the place where you are NOT on a diet. Something that is sustainable. For me, keto is not sustainable. I can't say that I'm never going to have bread, pizza, pasta, certain fruits ever again. So if its not sustainable for me, I don't do it. Same for intermittent fasting, weight watchers. It would never last for me long term, so I don't. Calorie counting is what I can sustain long term. (And all of those other diets are just calorie limiting without counting anyway...) With calorie counting, I eat anything I want, I just had to learn to balance and how to adjust if I want something that is higher in calorie.
In general, remember the stupid saying "You can't outrun your fork". If you are trying to change yourself and weight loss is your primary goal at this point, focus on the diet and not the exercise. I lost 100 pounds without 1 minute of exercise. If you try to change too much at one time, you are going to make it very hard on yourself and make it more likely you will fail. If you are on that exercise bike for an hour, or doing some other activity you aren't burning enough to account for a bad or inconsistent diet.
Good luck

Re: I have had it
I’ve been on that diet roller coaster. Exercise for a week or two and stop, eat good for a week then don’t go grocery shopping and stop. Trust me I did this for the past 4 years I think. Lol.
This is what I found works for me.
EXERCISE TIPS
The hump:
With exercise it takes about 4 weeks or more to get into it. This is where it becomes more of a routine and you enjoy doing it or don’t feel right when you miss it. It’s the hardest hump but when you get passed it, it will be worth it.
Don’t do it alone:
If you can do this journey with someone that, it helps so much. Even if it’s just to get started.Ex. I started finally getting into working out consistently again in February and then the pandemic hit. The girls in my family wanted to get in shape and we started doing zoom workouts or posting on family text group what exercise we did that day. It kept me going. My cousin and did morning workouts via zoom for three months because she wanted to get healthy.
I also participated in a move for 30min for 30 days challenge a blogger posted. We can do something like that on LIF if you’re interested for accountability. At the end of the week we would upload our progress to IG stories or FB using a gif or text to describe what we did each day. I can share the template and we can post in on a thread here. It helped me to stay active during the month of August. Which was hard because I had my nieces sweet 16, 3 bdays including my DH and our anniversary. So eating right was in the toilet that month. Lol.
Mix it up:
I get bored so easily. Lol. So I mix up my workouts. I also like to shock my body. It helps me tremendously to see results in my body from toning to actually seeing the scale go down. I do my virtual kickboxing class, YouTube Videos, Pilates/HIIT/Cardio in this Gymondo app, walks/hike, before pandemic I would do elliptical at the gym. Sometimes I will sign up for a free class like Orange Theory or gym pass for a week to LA Fitness to take their classes.
On YouTube I like the Body Project videos a lot. I’m finally getting buy in from my DH and he likes them because it’s all standing. It’s hard for him to do floor work. I also do some cardio Latin dance video from Danielle Steele.

Re: I have had it
8 years ago I lost about 55lbs maybe more. The first 20 was eating right, no exercise. Then I started exercising using the tips I posted above. I pretty much used MY Fitness Pal to count calories and did a series of several different diets which in the end taught me how to eat right.
I did south beach for a month using this book I bought for $8. It had a meal plan and recipes. So it was interesting to cook new things. I’ve done the green smoothie diet but modified where I’m eating meals and snacks. Reduce or gave up alcohol for a period. It helps to shock your body and you have more energy to workout.
I’m not suggesting you do these diets but they have helped me in realizing what healthy foods I like to eat. Counting calories and south beach helped me a lot on my first journey. I kept the weight off for 6 years until I started working full time. Stopped going to the gym and eating poorly.
It’s all about changing your lifestyle and maintaining balance. So this time around I’m incorporating green smoothies with low carb, reduced or no sugar meals. Such as cauliflower mash, Brussel sprouts with bacon, spaghetti squash, more chicken than red meat. etc. One dinner could be south beach, the next day can be a Keto recipe. I feel like they all have the same premise and I want to eat what I like. Drinking lots for water, a gallon a day. If drink alcohol, only on the weekends.
I would suggest meal prepping and menu planning. It keeps you on track and it also gets tiring making these healthy meals daily to avoid from eating out.
Most important, don’t be so hard on yourself and give yourself rewards and a break from time to time.
Eta: if interested I can email you some of the recipes for smoothies or from the south beach book. I’ve have screenshots etc from sharing it with my family.

I joined ww and starting virtual runs. The medals are cute and many are cheap. It keeps me motivated to jog/walk consistently. I find the challenge helps me stay motivated. Lost 20 so far.
