ANOTHER gift giving question

BIL and his wife decided earlier this year that did not want to exchange birthday / Christmas gifts between our children (who are cousins). This announcement right AFTER I sent a gift to their daughter for her birthday but fine, whatever.

They are having a baby in January. This is their 5th so I doubt there is much they need. I feel weird NOT sending a gift but then I will be kinds pissed if my kids receive nothing from Christmas from them.

I would end up sending a gift for the new baby. It's more of a "welcome to the world" gift instead of an annual Christmas or birthday gift.

But, you're lucky because the baby isn't due until January. So, wait until after Christmas and then buy something. JMO

Re: ANOTHER gift giving question

i agree with nycbuslady on all points. wait and see what happens at christmas.

i think this will free you to spend all that mental energy (and money) to your own children. try seeing the joy that will come with that.

side note... take it for what i'm charging you.

earlier, this year, i came to the realization that i am NOT obligated to give anything to anyone. PERIOD. i do not HAVE to worry and start knitting as soon as i hear that a relative is pregnant. i do not HAVE to do squat for anyone.
when i truly accepted this information, it took a big burden off my shoulders. i give with a much lighter heart, now. i don't expect anything... not saying that you only give to receive. but i don't expect the person i give to to treat my gift with respect, to like it, to be gracious, to give back in kind. i expect nothing.
i give the gift and leave the rest to the gift-giving/receiving gods.

I don’t see how Christmas gifts and the new baby gift are related. Just send some diapers, and maybe a more parent centered gift this time around(such as wine or restaurant gift card) and maybe send it deeper into January. I wouldn’t associate this with a Christmas gift. I would continue to honor their request for no holiday gifts.

I wouldn't send anything, they asked no birthday gifts and to me this falls under that.

I would send a new baby gift, regardless of the Christmas gift situation. It doesn't have to be big. Just something would be a nice acknowledgement of his arrival.
