Parent Advocate in Schools
Looking for any resources regarding a parent advocate in schools.
Child is early elementary school and has issues with anxiety/depression. Parent is strongly disagreeing with decisions of the principal and school psychologist, but has the support of her pediatrician. Is there a resource I can point her to? She is looking to do what she thinks is best for her child, but the school disagrees.
TIA!

The parent disagrees with the way the principal and school psychologist want to address the child’s anxiety/depression? Or that they’re not doing enough to help?Has the parent tried to reach out to the superintendent?

Does she have an IEP or any other plan in place? If she does not, that would be the first step. There should be a parent advocate available. You usually see them with the CSPE group.

Disagreement is over online verses in person schooling. They are on LI.

She needs to get a 504 or an IEP to get accurate services. If she does not have these yet, then she needs to request testing from the school district. It needs to be done in writing. Everything needs to be in writing. If she has a 504 plan, then she needs to call a meeting and discuss the options. Have the doctor write a report and recommendations. There are parent advocates around but they are not cheap. She should try to first resolve it on her own by going through the proper channels.
